There are other similar ones around for mountain running.

@buzzman are you (or your Dad) still making the canvas ankle puttees? They are the best I have had.

I wore them a few times and they felt pretty good while "in use" but at night and next day I could definitely tell my muscles and ankles had been doing a lot more work to keep stability, now I just kick about in them dont use for hunting

Ok. I was hoping that they would have been excellent! I play a lot of sport and cycle around so I'm reasonably fit...but as soon as I put traditional boots on they cause me some issues with my right hip (outer ligament, not actually the joint). Or maybe it's my pack? Either way... I'm wondering about going lightweight...

For years I used Meindls & Garmint boots then I tried a pair of Saloman 4D GTX boots & never looked back!

They aren’t as grippy as the Meindls but you adjust to knowing what you can & can’t walk on & how slippery things will be anyway.

As there a light boot I found I was lighter stalking through the bush.

I’m on my second pair of Salomon’s as I wore out the first.

Another boot I was looking at was the Lowa Z6 boots but I got the Salomons at a good price so went with them instead.

I also came across the Crispi boots & was impressed at their quality so I could see them as a good boot.

have worn ashleys for last ten years and love them MOST OF THE TIME... not so flash on really cold or really hot days,perfect in the bush,but not so much out in tussock,after a mate gave me much flack I caved and bought a pair off SARVO......have worn them on hill 5 times so far,got blood on them most of those times and so far really like them,the soles remind me of the old john bull commandos,grippy but soft enough to feel whats underneath,really good on rock too. I dont get the foot scauld I used to do with all leather boots.

Well worth looking into them, just make sure you use the good boots when you need the ankle support

I have a pair of Merrel light weight boots I wear with Sealskin gortex socks for short forays nice light and don't hold water.

Would not use them on the tops long term I have already had a light weight boot fall apart on the tops and had to hop it.

Really getting tired of old gortex boots with insulation getting wet weighing a ton and taking a week to dry.

Also bloody cold in the snow and frost.

Still looking for the perfect boot.

Can they handle a hunt for a few days, rocky terrain? Or do they take a fair beating?

I use mine for bush hunting and they are very comfortable. Probably different conditions than what you get in canterbury but fairly hard wearing. I wear mine all the time, not just hunting. Got a year or 2 out of the last pair. They are still wearable but had a couple of holes so moved into the spare pair.

Also have a pair of the Salomons that I picked up because i wanted something more light weight than the Asolo's i was using.
Had them about 3 years and love them.
Done a fair bit in the around south Canterbury on steep rocky stuff snd they have held up well
