Thread: Lightweight sleeping bags (Mont Bell?)

Righto, following up from the tent thread.
My Mountain Hardware bag is sweet. A 650 down bag with lots of fill but bulky, it seldom comes out due to this and I will normally use a reasonably new Macpac Latitude 500 unless it is very cold. Again a great bag but again bulky. I originally bought a Sanctuary with 800 down but I had large reservations as to its ability to keep me warm when I could see straight through it even when left to loft for some time! It was too off putting to trial on the hill.
I missed out on a cheap Mont Bell Super Spiral UL #3 the other night and am kicking myself and am thinking this will be the bag for me.
The newer 800 series Mont Bell is around 600g and I think will be what I'm after. Any other suggestions?
Anyone rate the Mont Bell bags?

Have you considered these James? There is a warmer model.

Kinda hate mummy bags. Be fucked if I can lay still all night like a corpse. I always end up with the hood over my face! The stretchy Mont Bell is something I was liking the idea of.

I hadn't considered that, haven't tried a mummy bag, I always imagined that when you rolled onto your side the bag just went with you?

It is nice gear. I have the old model cocoon 500 (cocoon -8) with the 3/4 zip, it can be a prick if you use a liner.
They are also a bit winder than other bags.

Ive got a mont bell, had it since about august last year and used it for probably 7 nights in total since then. It doesn't seem to roll around with you tho, but in the biting cold of winter with the thing zipped up totally it might, but it hasn't been that cold for me yet.

its a bit see through but the colour is yellow, so.

dads got a 6 or 700 series mapac he got a year or so ago, and the mont bell packs down a shitload more than that.

I have an Alsek, very happy with it!

@ the Claw, what do you think of the Alsek? I have had my eye on the Sawatch for some time. Really like the concept. No zip, no hood, lightwieght. Brilliant! If I wasn't so happy with my current bag (Mountain Hardware Phantom 15), I would have already bought one by now.

Really like it. Light, compact and warm. I haven't had it out in really cold conditions (light frost is the coldest) but I have been plenty warm so far. I like that the bag is attached to the mat and doesn't have a hood as I tend to be a restless sleeper so get tangled up in my bag at times! Not so in the Alsek though as it stays put when changing position. I have just purchased a lightweight down hooded jacket that I will wear in it during colder weather if necessary.

Cheers. Very similar thoughts to me. Im off to Canada in a couple of months, so may try to track one down over there.

I've got the Mont Bell UL #3, and I've actually been a little disappointed by how warm it isn't; even with a sleeping bag liner (which is supposedly thermal, although I'm not convinced) I've still been cold a couple of times, in (I think) somewhere between 0-5°, although in drafty circumstances too. However, it's pretty tight for me (6' and solid), so it's possible I'm just squashing or stretching it a bit too much to get the best out of it.
