Lost PLB

I feel like a chump…

After a few stories on here of people being unable to reach their PLB in an emergency, I’ve switched from carrying mine on my pack to my belt. A bit of a PITA cos it clashes with my pack hip belt, but not the end of the world.

Yesterday morning it slipped off my belt during a pre-dawn toilet stop. I put it down while I rearranged my gear, but must have forgotten to reattach it. When I realised it was missing and went back for it later that day, it wasn’t there. I’m guessing someone picked it up, but I re-traced my route anyway without joy.

It's an ACR ResQLink and was lost on the track from Sladdens Bush to Ashley Saddle, Mt Oxford, in case anyone on here picked it up.

Notify the rescue co-ordination guys in Welli. Hopefully they will flag it if someone attempts to re register it

If you run a bino harness get a pouch. Mine never leaver my person on a hunt unless I'm in my tent and even then its within arms reach.

Bummer, bit of a shame you can't ping it's location like with crapple eye phones

That’s what I’m hoping, cos that’s what I would do… have emailed the beacons.org address so they have a flag on it

Did you ask beacons NZ to de-register the beacon or just keep your record of loss on file? If it was activated, RCCNZ will contact your emergency contacts if still registered in your name . Might be worth asking your insurance company if you are covered for a replacement. We have had clients in the past ask for a copy of their purchase receipt to be able to make a claim.

Let me know if we can help with a new one if you have to go down that path.

Didn't ask them to de-register it as I'm still hopeful it will get handed in. Unfortunately the excess on my policy will probably make it pointless to claim... I'll look into it but we're pretty stretched financially at the moment so I hate to say it but I'll probably have to go without for a while. Thanks for the offer though.

@CooeeBay I have email out to the maritime folks who look after the business side of beacon activation at present..no reply yet
was out on tramp over weekend 7 of the 13 people had beacons
two questions popped up
#1 should the likes of landsar members and emergency services folks PLBS be flagged as such..so if the yare set off it WILL be a SHTF situation and respond in hurry with force
#2 and this one was HOTLY debated...should more than one be set off if its a really bad situation..giving more chance of a definate signal getting out and also giving message this is serious situation needing major help fast.
be really interesting to see what reply they come back with.

I wonder if a 'lost' sign at the access point would help.

All beacon responses are afforded the same level of priority.
One beacon at a time. It’s not just a lat/long position, but also a radio signal to home in on.

Thought I’d update you all with a happy ending to this. I got a call from BeaconsNZ on Friday to say another hunter had found it the day before!

Turns out the belt loop was broken, so I hadn’t left it behind after all - it had just fallen off. Probably due to the hip belt clash issue. Maybe a good tip for others - I’ll be attaching the PLB lanyard to myself as well as the pouch from now on.

I dunno if the GC who found it is a member here, but if you are, thanks again!

Some people might think I'm a cunt but that's how I got my gps. I am the kind of guy that does hand stuff in or try and find the owner. On this particular occasion we went into a hut, on arriving there the place stunk of rotting animal and there was rubbish everywhere in and out of the hut. Our local tip is tidier, It took about 3hrs to tidy it up to make it stayable picking up all the rubbish and getting rid of the rotting bits of animal just left lying around amongst the rubbish I found a gps, normally Id try and find the owner but the state they left the place in I thought fuk you you deserve to loose it.
