making a knife and a sheath - part 1 (assembly)

So I am still intrigued by the scandi grind, but feeling a Mora (or in my case, a frost), does not adequately portray it I went further afield and tried a condor bushlore, this was better but was not quite what I was looking for as I felt the blade was a tad too thin at roughly 2.5 mm and the overall knife was a tad to long at 235 mm, it was better than the Frost but still left a little to be desired.
Not wanting to wait 10 years and get a second mortgage for a Ray Mears Woodlore I decided to make my own knife.

Sort of anyway, I found an English chap who makes knives and knife kits, got a custom made 5mm thick scandi ground blade with a secondary convex bevel, I suppose a Scandivex, made from O1 tool steel, 220 mm long with half being handle half being blade, I also got a set of loveless bolts with brass nuts and a stainless bolt, some brass tubing, some green vulcanised rubber liners and a nice piece of super grade curly birch wood for the handles.

I also got a piece of graph paper to make the pattern for the sheath.

I know need some epoxy and to do some sanding, I may also need a step down drill bit, not sure where to get that but will start looking next, in the meantime I will begin sanding.

    Hey Shelley.

Great to see someone getting into knife making!

Did you buy the blade from Declan at Wolfclaw? It looks like his makers mark

Anyway, don't spend money on a step n drill, I just use two different drill bits and some masking tape to make sure I don't go too deep. Otherwise you can make your own. Just search on you tube for step drill Walter Sorrels.

    Cheers

Hey Thipa, just found your web site, wow man you make some sweet stuff!
No I got the blade of Gary Mills in the UK, the blades from the Timberwolf, hence the mark, where do you get your leather to do sheaths?

    Hi Shelley.

Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate

I buy my leather from Lapco in Auckland. They have an offcuts bin, then you don't have to buy a whole Hyde.

I prefer vegetable tanned leather for sheaths, so make sure you get some of that.

Shout if you need anything else, or advise etc.

    Kind regards
