    Mapping AP

    Hey guys

What are people running on their phones?

I was using Fatmap but its getting moved into the Strava fitness app meaning I got to pay more for a heap of shit I don't need and it wont carry over my waypoints so I might as well start from scratch with a new app.

I also have Memory Map but its slow and so very average.

    NZ Topo50 (iPhone)
Works really well, think it cost me $7 or something (north island) and works in flight mode which is great for battery life.

Works on Android too I think now, I have a trial version of the app which includes a few new features like the WAMS legal access data. The owner of the app is really good for customer service too, gets back to you quickly with support queries.

NZ Topo Maps by Atlogis. I think something like $20 annually. Records routes, overlays of topo and aerial, bloody awesome. The other one (NZ Topo50) that you download is fine, but limited detail. I paid for both, but never used the NZ Topo50 one. The developer said they were looking into being able to download more detailed areas of certain maps, but unsure if that has happened.

NZ Topo Maps (Atlogis) allows you to download certain areas to whatever level of detail you want/need for offline use (depending on storage). The route recorder once allowed me to follow back thru some grunty bush to find a dropped Howa mini mag, which indebted me to it forever (luckily Rob Hughes-Games/HG Precision has solved that problem from ever happening again!).

NZ Topo50 (careful, there's a few apps with similar names) is very good with it's satellite overlays, DOC boundaries and compass, but I can't get passed iHikeGPS-NZ for the simplicity of the interface. I have both apps on my phone. iHikeGPS-NZ is the go to, but if I want to check the other things I mentioned, I'll flip to NZ Topo50

I MADE my mate download NZ Topo50 before our hunt at Woodhill the other day. Despite being a sceptic and luddite, he agree it was a game changer.

I think that has happened and it's a step up. Def worth getting... There are a lot of options now, another is pocket Maps.

Topo 50, it's nice and easy. I was running a different one that was compatible with my apple watch so I didn't have to pull out the phone, but it cost $100 a year which was a bit steep (according to my boss when it showed it was billed to the company credit card).

Are you talking about the topo maps or satellite imagery maps that aren't clear
