Thread: MTNGEAR BIPOD Question(s)

While at Sika Show I looked at MTNGEAR BiPods, which I thought looked pretty good units.
If I understand correctly two models are offered - the Mountain Bipod and Backcountry Bipod.
To set up is spendy but maybe worthwhile when I can afford to buy but wanted to ask for user views first in case any downside in not obvious.
I'm not a big Bipod user but do have one of the compact Harris models which I must say performs very well but the only downside I've found is that the forward weight bias makes shoulder carrying the rifle on the sling a pain as the rifle is forever pulling backwards and it takes firm pushing on the rifle to counter this. I'm assuming that the lighter weight of the MTNGEAR units might prevent this happening ...??
Anyway, hope some of you guys would post a few comments for me to consider. Thankyou.

I like my back country..
- can keep bipod in a pouch for stalking and pull it out for a longer shot.
- spread it wide for a steady rest and shooting down hill, with rifle butt at a nice low level.
- bring legs together, once extended, for shooting up steeper hills (My harris is limited to elevation if there's nothing to prop the bipod up on - butt can't get any lower)
- have multiple rails (one on each rifle) so the bipod works across various platforms
- light weight and sturdy enough (practice is recommended)
- easy cant function for use on uneven ground

Can seem a bit fiddly at first, but after a few missions it'll become autopilot..

Not sure if that answers your question about the carry aspect, just my 2c

What @Jukes said, I have added the rail to both my rifles and just slip bipod on when needed. Best bit for me Matt is in the next village and drops things I buy in my mailbox

I think there's 3 models. I've had the ducks nuts top model before but sold it on a rifle to get the sale across the line. I'm going to get another one soon. I've played with most of the top shelf bipods and like the MTN gear the most. Simple, sturdy and very reasonably priced considering their light weight. I highly recommend them.

I had one for a bit, wasn't a fan of the protruding pic mount on the stock and the balance of my rifles when carried over the shoulder with the sling mount further back on the rail. Certainly a well designed product with a lot of adjustment options. Went back to a javelin with flush cup in stock for my needs.

Very happy with mine.

+1 for the Mtn bipod, got the mountain one with @TimCs rifle, awesome piece of kit and best bipod I’ve used on steep terrain. You can pretty much get yourself set up for a shot regardless of where you find yourself and with the negligible weight no reason not to carry it for every outing. Not cheap to buy but definitely good value in my eyes.

You will never regret buying one they are awesome I have the mountain and a rail on all my rifles.

I've never been a fan of bipods mainly because of all that extra weight they add to the rifle and with say the harris version if you want to remove it from the rifle its a time consuming process. The MTN solves these issues, super quick to put on and off and weighs almost nothing. After talking to Matt I spent the extra on the Mountain Bipod and have never regretted it.

I have the MTN Bipod, I like it , would replace it if I lost it, best to practise setting it up so quick to use.

At 140g pretty exceptional functionality and design. Store mine in the pack lid, only use when glassing. Replaced a Spartan Javelin - better angles and height, more robust. NZ desugned and manufactured. Buy one

Hey mate pretty much nailed it.

With regards to the rifle swinging around there are a lot of factors such as short stock, long heavy barrel, suppressor, sling position. The weight of the harris and the fact that the sling mount is further from the stock doesnt help for sure. Our sling tab rails keep the attachment close to the stock and only moves it back about 1cm which is going to be far better than the harris but there are a lot of other factors so no guarantee it will be perfect either. My question is how does it carry without the harris on the existing swivel stud? Typically the best sling solution is mounting qd cups in the side of the stock as far forward as possible. A possible worst case option.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for your post and comments. Also for your time at Sika Show to demonstrate the system. To answer you, my rifles shoulder carry OK without any bipod attached but most of the time I carry rifles in my hands so shoulder carry is not a huge factor. It's just that as the Harris is fiddly to attach / detach it tends to stay on the rifle so the shoulder carry discomfort becomes annoying.
If using your system I'm sure I would tend to tote the rifle with a detached bipod and only attach it when use is called for. Your design allows pretty fuss free attach / detach ( ments ).
