Teaching compass skills to a group one day..gave them all the same bearing to set on their compasses, and told them to walk in that direction. Eight of the group of nine walked off confidently, the ninth (an attractive buxom young woman) looked perplexed. She complained that her compass needle pointed in a different direction when she set the bearing I had given them. I swapped her compass with mine, in case her one was faulty (it happens). Got the same result. I asked her if she was wearing anything metallic around her navel level, where she was holding the compass. She thought about it, then exclaimed: "Oh, I've got an underwire bra on! Should I take it off?" Mmmmmm......
Another trap: beware of cheap compasses, they always point towards Beijing.

Whenever I ever get down to your area on the way to the Canals again, to stop off and sort reloading a .270 which I really have to do. I will run you thru doing a compass resection to find/prove your position. Easier with a mils prismatic compass but should be able to bluff you enough to understand ..... MGA and GMS
For old people it was always .... My Grandmas arse and Grandma sucks. But unfortunately, we won't be down that way as we have seen our first whitebait moving up the river. ONLY 5 days to go

That could be construed... Yeah ok that might be classed as an "intrusive thought'...

Used to have an issue with certain gear that had metal (steel) buckles and loops attached, or when things like carabiners were on board. Rifle is a good one for that too, although I did laugh with one learner driver. Sitting there on a rusty old piece of decaying forestry gear trying to work out why his bearing didn't match his map every time he got up and started walking - turn around and sit back down on the f**king great chunk of steel and scratch head - all good jump up and WTF? Giggle, giggle...

My jingle is- Good Morning Sunshine

Grid to magnetic....Subtract. ie- grid bearing to magnetic bearing subtract the declination angle and vise versa.

BUT this only holds true when the declination angle is east of true north.
In other parts of the world the declination angle maybe west of true north and when this is so, everything is the opposite way around.

If you don't know the declination angle in your location then you can find it using the sun and a compass.
The stick in the ground shadow method will give you a true east/west line and hence a true north line. You can then use your compass to find the difference between the true north and magnetic north lines.

My point being, don't assume what works at one location will work at another. Declination changes with location and you'll be miles off using your 'east' jingle if the declination is to the west.

Fun fact- The south magnetic pole doesn't even lie within the Antarctic circle.

..... and the north magnetic pole is near Hudson bay - when I worked on the north coast of Canada magnetic north was due west, strangely enough we all had to use GPS to navigate.
