I have a north ridge Bivy bag and it is great ... seems to be strong and reliable...... I don't however trust the North ridge Flys. not from experience but simply comparing them side by side with the huntec flys there seemed to be a few corners cut. No double stitching or reinforcing in the corners where the ropes attached etc...
Cant say I have looked at the bivys but am assuming they will be similar to the flys....
If he is looking at being out in the shit weather surely he is better off spending a few extra $$$ and getting a good quality light weight tent??

I agree with Gibo, they are good for the price but hes better off spending a bit more and getting something thats going to last the distance.
I Have a North Ridge fly, a Huntech fly and a Huntech 2 man bivy. The North face fly is more basic and lighter weight but have had it out in pretty shit weather and its never let me down, Huntech hasnt let me down either, but it is heavier material and a bit more expensive so should be better.

There was a thread on this just the other day

I own both a Huntech 2man and a small (6x4) North Ridge and the NR is lighter and I use it most - if he's on a budget I'd get the NR one, take it into a sewing shop/bag repair place and get the loops reinforced, replace the stock string with paracord and use plastic pegs with the sharp edges sanded down -
that way he can look out for a Huntech 2-man secondhand for cheap later
Oh, and a Warewhare blue small tarp as groundsheet too - cheap and disposable
