I only just realized that with the nztopo50 apps you can actually download higher resolution aerial imagery within the app than is the default download. It's a pretty feature reach app for the money IMO.

@Gibo in the settings there is a button for “download extra satellite imagery”. Says it may incur network charges.
Yeh I think the idea is to turn that on and zoom in on your target areas of interest when at home on wifi. Then you can turn that off. You'll see an option to clear the cache. The size of this will represent how much zoomed in aerial imagery you now have.

Another pro-tip: If your phone case has a magnet clip on it, make sure you remove your phone from the case so it's nowhere near the magnet. Ask me how I know.
I've used the NZ topo 50 app when out in the Kaimai's and Rotorua etc. Have not had any navigation problems, and use it to log deer sign and spots etc.
I have noticed an issue that some of the tracks get 'deleted' when comparing to older paper maps. But that is probably a topic for a different thread.
You can do a manual export of all waypoints and tracks and manual import. There is also the ability to turn on a automatic back up on schedule.
