    yes and no....and once upon a time most pocket knives didnt lock..swiss army knives are classic and dont lock... the tang goes back into the slot and stays in place... you would have to be doing something rather dumb to make it come out..like pushing on BACK of blade,trying to stab a walrus with knife held in fingertips...the string thing is just extra just because I can...only do it on the small version as string is on there so can hang around my neck.
    when you look at it..pushing knife into something cutting side first,actually pushes the tang HARDER into handle.
