Thread: Pack Mounted Rifle Holder

Not 100% sure what I'm after is actually called but I'm looking for a pocket that can attach to my pack which I can put the butt of my rifle in and then use my pack straps to secure the rifle to the pack for long walks. I've attached a photos of similar. Thinking something like this with 2 small clips that hook on to the sleeping bag compression straps. Anyone have, use or know where to procure something like this?

Never mind. As soon as I posted I stumbled across what I was looking for from Stoney Creek.

You beat me to it..

I grabbed the Stoney Creek one when I was trying to find something to finish off a H&F voucher last year.
Only used it once so far, but worked perfectly for where I was, which was walking uphill through bush, with lots of low branches etc. Normally have rifle strapped to the side of the pack, and catch the barrel on a few branches on the way up. Could drop it low enough with the SC scabbard, that it didn't catch once.

Only negative was that it swung around quite a bit, but would easily be solved by adding another point of contact on the back of the pack somewhere.

Cactus Outdoor make these in Christchurch - offer a bit more protection for the scope and covers the bolt so it would get snagged.

That is primo buddy. One on the way. Primary use is for those long semi boring walking portions or when I need to have both hands for something more technical. I just can't get used to a sling nor can I get comfortable with one while wearing a pack.

Strongly recommend the cactus scabbard. It’s very comfortable and keeps the rifle out of your way

Ok so this is my ghetto version made from the cuffs of an old pair of jeans with a bit of webbing strap on it. Took about half hour to make and it works great. Only issue is it soaks up water if it is wet and makes it a tad heavier. Over all cost was zero as I have harvested clips and webbing from kids worn out school bags etc.

I have the kifaru version. It's awesome. Can sling rifle so that it comes through under your armpit and is ready and drops away by popping 1 tab. Great for that cheeky surprise deer

Pretty much how the ghetto version works. The pouch attaches to a compression strap on my pack/day pack. the rilfe comes up from there foward and is cliped on to the front of my shoulder strap via a simple webbing strap with a clip. Very easy access to the rifle while keeping the hands free to steady ones self when bush bashing.

Yeah works very well and is much more comfortable than I thought. Just need to be careful where you point the muzzle especially if your hucking uphill with a buddy

Alrighty, so, got one of the cactus models. How are people attaching these to their packs? I've got a macpac cascade that I want to hook it to and I've tried lacing it through the cord on the pack face but that has to be retensioned every time that I pack it. Tried along the side and that's ok but feel there is likely a better way.

Following as I have a Cascade and was going to buy a cactus scabbard today but you must have brought the last one as they are out of stock (out of aprons a well but that's another story....)

@HuntGatherRepeat did you find a way to attach the cactus scabbard to the cascade pack?

I made this one up years ago.works well for me. I have a rope loop on the upper compresion strap and use a small bungy across the middle to hold it still. Can remove it pack on but have to take pack off to replace it
