Thread: Radio suggestions.. Bush & Tops hunting

Hiya,

I've done a bit of a thread search for radio suggestions, a lot of mixed opinions and quite old threads.

Pretty keen on importing a set. What would you recommend? I'm currently looking at the Midland GTX's which look pretty reasonably priced.

Any suggestions / options would be great!

I have used Buafeng 5w output purchased from Aliexpress $50NZ shipped. Worked great.

I use my Garmin Rino gps with the 5w radio.

Seems to work ok for me.

If you import you need to make sure it is set up for the Aus/NZ frequencies.

The Buafengs are easy to program for NZ frequencies. Takes about a minute if you know how.

Garmin Rino 650's are what myself and all my hunting mates use, not just able to talk but can indicate our positions...

The new model looks pretty trick too, the teach boys would know more.

Got a pair of 5w and a al-cheapo 1w set, makes a big difference. Wanted a set that ran on Aaa

Uniden UH074 or UH076, they're not cheap, but they work very well and are indestructible. We have heaps of them here and use on the farm, found one stomped into the mud in a paddock that had been missing for over a year, gave it a clean and chucked it on charge and away it went again. They retail around $240ish each, we bought ours in bulk straight from Uniden NZ for about $160 a pop from memory

Use them every year in the tahr blocks and other members of the party can be miles away over ridges etc and can still make contact sweet as. Only "downfall" I would say is that they have a battery pack so need charging rather than replacing batteries but a full charge lasts a week in the blocks anyhow turning on each hour and checking in with others and the odd session walking someone in on an animal

+1 mine are the earlier ones in this shape UHO75 I think, they are battered numbers all rubbed off keys, scratched, been soaked multiple times they keep going. parts are available such as aerials and switches which I have had to replace. Batteries are available so you can have spares. The batteries last a long time, I replaced my first set in 2011 the replacements are still going strong, despite abuse, running them flat. Only thing I don't like is they can turn on accidentally if rolling around in a pack. They have a channel lock which can also be bumped off, but on the whole they rate as excellent.

Vhf version requires amateur license. UHF does not.
