I don't want to know how it preforms while sitting on my ass on a quad bike, I want to know whats its like pushing through scrub!!!
No, I'm kidding, thanks for the feed back, I will try to find a cheaper price on them and then see...
I have Hunters Element XTR and Rate it, has performed well for me in some real shit weather. I have full length zip but can get a pull over type as well.
Have not used for a heap of scrub bashing, held up very well so far to the abuse I have put it through though.
Cheers
Dino
I have one too and love it but dont know how it would go pushing through rough stuff

I have the h&f shearwater which has certainly kept me dry. Coped ok with the rough stuff, tho I was surprised how heavy it became in the rain. But, it worked, and I was happy. They're cheaper now and I think their new fabric might be lighter in weight.
Check out the Arc'Teryx Theta AR or SVX. Expensive (especially the SVX) but looks like a really solid option. I am going to get an AR once I scrap together the funds and hopefully find one on sale somewhere...
For hunting I would say a quality poncho, keeps you dry, your pack dry and your rifle out of the elements...can use it to build a fly or groundsheet.
One of those clear plastic toss away one's are good to have in your daybag for when caught out in the weather...you may look a dork...but a dry dork.
Hmm might need a poncho a day for 10 days in fiordland...
I'm after a new coat too,had stoney creek .ridgeline, hunters element going to get something at the fieldays but will be watching this tread for advice.
Stoney Creek Alpine Jacket
yip , shes also called the Tarn , Mines been to Fiordland twice already , It would be the hardest wearing jacket i've tested , While its not as compact as the 3/4 zip jackets out there i prefer not to have to pull a wet jacket over my head.
For the ones that say it will be too noisey walking through the bush , its not , and i find when its wet the bush is noisey anyway .
Products i have tested in Fiordlad , Hunters Element XLR , Huntlite , Swari Tahr . Still go back to my Tarn for a bullet proof jacket. Might try Rob's new XLR Extreme this Roar for a compact overnight flycamping jacket
Wish I had of seen this thread before I bought my jacket!
For staring dry I like my British milsurp Gortex smock. Quite heavy and a little bulky but it works extremely well. Topped it off with matching trou for $200 total.
British Gore-Tex Smock Used
British DPM Goretex Pants
Was listed as used. I would say issued but unused. Think some of the Brits must be allergic to rain.
Also think Kuiu is worth a look, especially the Chugach NX... KUIU Ultralight Hunting | Committed to developing the finest ultralight technical mountain hunting clothing and gear on the planet
Stony creek tussock is good.. 6 months in the rain in nachengwea Tanzania , did not get wet,, 18 months doing possums and ferrets day in day out and it's still going strong.
No pockets =no leaks
Most of the hunting type jackets that quote 100% waterproof and yet breathable absorb water like a sponge and then don't dry very quickly. I now have a macpac hollyford which is quite long and have been pleased with its performance both in fiordland and westland.
Swazi thar anorak used for the past 3 years. twice in Stewart island in the pissing rain and snow for 10 days. top jacket wont leave home with out it.
Swazi one tough mutha. Is just what it says. Light and completely water proof and from memory has like a 5 yr warranty
Anyone tried the Earth Sea Sky jackets?
I want an Arc'teryx LEAF Alpha LT but lol $
I have a bunch of there gear, Its very very good stuff so far with limited testing. Went out yesterday in sideways rain and lots of wind, Open (ish) walking, creeks and sitting on a slip for quite a while and i stayed dry.
I had my chugach nx but used it as a gound mat and it worked well.
Was wearing there attack pants and Guide jacket. Was dry as and very warm.
I've got a Ridgeline Roar 2. I used it this Easter, it well and truly raining and it did well to keep me dry and blocked the wind well. It was a tad damp on the inside but I think that was mainly sweat. The microflece sweater I had underneath was still nicely dry and I wore them both the next day, whilst the coat was a tad damp it wasn't waterloddeg and kept me warm and dry again. I was very impressed, due to costing me $200 from 1-day. Heaps of good pockets and is quiet too.
I've got the Roar 2 pants as well. They kept me warm and dry, but due to me usually only ever wearing shorts they were sweaty as, but kept the water out and kept me warm.
Got them off trademe second hand so I'm pretty stoked.
Spot on there Gadget!
I use one of the Goretex tops too, I'm on my second one now after the first cost me bugger all compared to some of my other hunting waterproofs and lasted me a couple of years of abuse.
They aren't lined so weigh very little, the hood is very big as it's designed to fit over a helmet and they have kept me dry!
For the money, there isn't anything else that compares and being lightweight and compact, they're easy to stick in the bottom of your pack on those days where they just might be needed.
Earth Sea Sky jackets are amazing, I have a lot of friends that use them and rate them very high. Being made in NZ it's great to support the brand.
I own an Arc'teryx Alpha LT Pro Shell and I love it! Couldn't ask for a better jacket, payed $500 for it instead of $850 and after using it once over New Years in the horrible rain, it more than payed for itself. I now swear by it! Mind you, I use it for Mountaineering and Tramping, not hunting.
My stoney creek stillwater is pretty good. Been in some horrible weather and its kept me dry
