Rifle Scabbard for K2 M Standard frame pack

Anyone running a scabbard on a K2 pack?

    Homemade or commercial?

Looking at Cactus Outdoor as a possible. $140

Don't really want a flash expensive new pack. I don't pack huge loads and don't carry a pack long distances. Main use is day pack and to bring meat out. Would like to go hands free coming home, especially if the pack is full.

    Cheers

I have used a cactus outdoor scabbard for a while now and its been brilliant. However i have just got a new pack & opted for the rifle carrying system they offer with the pack, So have the cactus one for sale if your interested.

I've used the cactus scabbard along with several other brands and was unhappy with all of them.you will find that unless your pack is packed full you cant stop the rifle from swinging round and moving all the time. Also having the extra few kgs hanging off the side or the back changes your balance considerably and makes for alot more fatigue.
I ended up getting a eberlestock pack with the built in scabbard and am really happy with that but if I had my time again I would go for the FHF gear rifle sling attachment. It's basically a sling that clips to your pack and waistbelt securely and you can simply unclip it if you want to use rifle without taking pack off.
I haven't used one but they really look the business

    Mate that's brilliant! Thks

Considering a decent sling is upwards of $50 the price is not out of the way. Have ordered one

I'd be interested in how you get on Jhon, I've also been considering getting one for my K2.

I’ve got the rifle butt holder from k2, works well with the side compression straps.

I have the cactus outdoor scabbard. It works but it does have the cons that BradP mentions. I find that its good if your doing a lot of river crossings or climbing up and down scrambly bits where you need all of your limbs and the rifle on a sling on the shoulder just gets in the way or risks falling off. But walking long distances in open country and/or with a pack that doesn't have much in it, it turns your good pack into an uncomfortable pack.
I also use it for walking small game shooting so I can carry two firearms without them getting tangled up, it works a lot better with lighter weight rifles/shotguns than with heavier ones.

One other way I find works well for hands free is to just put the waist belt of the pack through the rifle sling when the rifle is on your shoulder. That keeps it well secured.

One of the issues with modern rifle.slings is the synthetic materials they're made do not grab on fabric so they continually slip off your shoulder. Great tip I got from.an old guy was to use the cotton military issue rifle slings. They don't slip. I bought up a bunch of 303B ones before they got scarce and expensive. Treasure them..

One of the claims that helped convince me on the FHF Gear Rifle Sling and Pack Attachment Kit from Points South, was that the sling was made from an anti slip material. Looking forward to trying it out

Interested to know if it works well, I bought a mystery ranch hands free rifle sling to fit on my mystery ranch pack & honestly it's not great, rifle still moves around way to much.
