    Yip.
We used in in Alaska for 3 weeks last month.
Was pretty sweet with msg and gps locations.
The issue is the contracts and zoning. You can't get on one in the US and try to use it in NZ unless you are txting US numbers.
I think you can get something for NZ but it's expensive comparatively.

I have been looking into satellite phone as well lately.

The Iridium Go (~NZ$1650) unit looks pretty good although talking with Wright Satellite Connections about prepay they tell me it is only really cost effective if you use more than 300-400 minutes per year outside of NZ/Aus when you compare it to their ANZ postpay Iridium plan. The iridium phones themselves are getting up there in price at and above NZ$2000 - though the 9575 phone looks pretty cool and ideal as it also seems to replace a GPS and EPIRB / PLB

Think i would rather use plb overing ringing 111 after last time's ordeal with the operator.

Yes, it is a problem with a sat phone is that you will likely need to deal with an operator. But I think this is outweighed by having the ability to talk with your helicopter pilot, or partner if you are just going to be late, or if your car is stuck or broken down, or potentially a paramedic for advice while you are waiting for the helicopter to turn up. And with a sat phone you definitively know help is on the way you are not stuck there hoping your PLB that has been buried in your day pack for the last three years is working.

For my purposes I think a sat phone works better and I would have a use for it with the field shoot I run and also with my day job on cross country pipeline (although this would be a minor use).

I thought so but just recieved an email from them this arvo( timings a bit freaky)

Unfortunately, due to an increase in network costs associated with the US dollar exchange rate, it has become necessary to make some changes to the inReach Safety plan. As of 1st November 2015 your plan will have an access fee of $22.95 per month.

Are you referring to 111 operator?? You can't call 111 from a Sat phone but you can call the Rescue Coordination Centre directly
