    Sharpening Scissors

Asked to do up some expensive dress making scissors. Options are to free hand with 5k and 8k Jap whetstones or buy an Edge Pro bevel kit with scissor attachment. Anyone do this? Shelley?

I've done them successfully freehand. Strange as it sounds, first trick is to try cutting neck off a glass bottle with them.... It works like steeling a knife.use cutting motion like normal and hold bottle to give a bit of resistance.dressmaker showed me this one.

Piece of piss on a Tormek if you know anyone with one.
Scissors typically don’t need to go anywhere near as fine as 5-8K as they generally want a slightly more ‘toothy’ than mirror edge.

I've had success using diamond laps but you've gotta concentrate of keeping the right angles. Generally there's not much material needing removal.

Yeah, done a few gasket scissors and the like which are a bit more brutal in their use than dressmakers gear (think dealing with chunks out of the blade etc...).

One thing that is worth looking at is if the two halves can be easily split as this makes it a LOT easier to set up for the right angles. If not ya just gotta work with them however ya can. Last set of engineering scissors I did I set up some small angle steel in the vice, two pieces to hold one blade in such a way that I didn't have the bulk of the vice in the way. Basically clamped the long end of the two pieces of angle in the vice, with a set of vice grips clamping the angle to the scissors. Bit rough but it worked and made it easier to get the correct angle. I draw filed the worst of the damage out of the edges, then went up the grades of stones until the worst of the garks were polished out (stopped at around 400grit if I remember right). Cut better than the new ones after that - saved them from the bin anyway. As noted, less is more and the inside face is a no go unless there's damage you need to sort out.
