I almost finished a small hunting knife and wonder if someone here can identify the wood I used..
I tried the wood identification sites but no luck.
I found a piece of heavy hard wood approx.20x20cm at the op shop, someone used it to carve a dolphin out but no signature or mark anywhere.
The wood is very hard, with open porous grains and yellow speckles here and there, the color is orange/red with dark streaks and has no distinguished smell to it.
I got enough wood left to make another knife in similar size and wonder if someone here can help with the identification?

if its very light in weight....and a wee sliver burns fast and sparks I would suggest Totara ...the red colour and yellow flecks suggest it.

    Hi Guys!

As mentioned in my intro thread I´m a interested in knife-making too. Here is a hunting knife I did a few years back for a mate in Tui:
Steel is RWL34, bolsters are brass an handle from some antler he gave me generously.

So every Christmas holiday I stop making knives for other people and make something that I want to make. Last year it was a Nakiri for my wife. This year I got to make a knife that had been kicking around in the back of my mind for 6 months plus.
I had a cheap commercial skinning knife that I gave to Padox and Joe90 to use and give me feedback on.
Plenty of deer and sheep later and feedback from other users and John Worthington I modified the design in both shape and size, everything was distilled down and mock ups made.
This was the end result, plenty of belly, smaller blade at 90mm. Safer handle design and more visually attractive in shape and curves. AEB=L stainless. Composite handles. Name: 20230110_193929.jpg

@kotuku , thanks for the comments but I don't think I am anywhere near that good mate. The knife turned out well and I got to make something that I have wanted to for a while.
