After refurbishing the kitchen knife (post #865) I got motivated to give a hunting knife I made in the late 90's a bit of a polish up.
I made the 115mm blade from an old saw blade that I got from a mill in Taupo.
The handle is a piece of Black Maire I got from a local wood turner. The wood was so hard I used an angle grinder to get the basic shape and it was sparking as I was doing it!!!
The brass guard and handle are pinned in place with brass rod.
Now it is nice and clean again I must get out and get some blood on it.

Im spending a lot of time in the bush and not really having to shoot many animals, so decided utility rather than pure hunting was a better option.

The pair together. Both clip into sheath and also have a safety domed keeper.

    Kansbol has full moulded grip.
    Multi mount base.
Nice size and looks perfect for around the camp and will test on a deer soon.
Nice stainless steel and awesome looking grind.
Sharp from factory but will be scary sharp soon.

Eldris neck knife kit is very small and handy.
Includes fir starter and the back of the knife blade is square for using on the fire steel.
Throws an awesome spark that smoulders for ages.
Only 50mm blade but Im expecting to find a lot of uses for it, especially whittling odds and ends.

So one month on I have had a chance to butcher a deer with each of the mora knives.

I cut up a small red stag on the Westcoast a few weeks ago with the Mora Kansbol. That's the bigger utility knife.
It was ideal for that job and has also been used around camp on a couple of trips.
Couldn't be any happier with it especially for a longer multi day trip.
Good sharp edge and held up well over a number of days doing lots of different tasks.

The tiny little More Eldris got a good work out yesterday evening.
I wanted to see how it would deal with a big task being a small knife.
This one was certainly a good test being a fairly decent sized stag, which it dealt to with ease.
Maybe a little short if you aren't so experienced.
But I found it very easy to use for a big job once I got used to both my hands being so close together with that ultra short blade.
It even dealt with the back straps nicely and my dog carried them home in her saddle bag pack. 10kg load.
This knife would be ideal for a light and fast minimalists alpine hunt.

    Show me your knives

A while ago I used to supply Bill Nikl with wood for the handles of his knives. Ended up getting this one off him. Then unfortunately lost touch with him. All of the contact details I’ve been given for him never seem to get through.
If someone happens to be chatting to him please let me know.

Average photos but nice little knife.
I covered the blade in crystalline wax to stop it going rusty as it doesn’t get much use.

I was having a tidy up the other day and found a drawer of some off cuts with knots and stuff that I used to save Bill. Macassar ebony, cherry, teak, oak, zebrano and walnut by the looks of it.

Maybe I could trade some pieces for a bit of hunting advise / tag along? Don’t come from a hunting background and looking to meet people who might show me a thing or 2.
Or maybe could tag along / help out on a knife build. Interested in learning new skills. Marine cabinet maker by trade.
Better than me hiding the nice grain in an end grain chopping board.

    Cheers.

@Shearer yeah some cool bit in there. Always used to collect them out of the firewood bin. Wish I had started years earlier. If anyone wants better photos let me know.

I would also be interested in some of that wood if you are anywhere near Auckland, and I could help you with a knife build, my set up would be a little cramped with two people but I’m sure we could manage.

Now how many of you all can say you have a "worn-out" pocket knife !!

Note the sheath for my Uddstrom, its a bit "made it myself" but its very deep and well shaped to the knife, its done the whole 32 years as well.

Small antler handle knife was made by a chap in Levin (Manakau) - it is my main hunting knife now as it usually sits in bum bag. Hard to sharpen if let go too long.

The Svord was purchased new in 1983 - probably one of the earlier knives by him (can't remember his name) Had an a lot of use doing home kill cattle in its 1st couple of years - we got $20 + hide (45-90$ at that time) Great knife and holds a keen edge
