nearly finished this Bob Engnath design. Pretty thin behind a wicked edge in 14c28n and some flex in the end half of blade. Be good for processing animals or fish I would think.
G10 scales quite nice to work with. Don't forget the respirator mask though.

Using a clamp/guide to keep a clean ricasso is a must for me as the tracking on my linisher is a bit temperamental. I probably get more mileage out of my belts than is advisable. They aren't cheap.
belts are the one thing you need to treat like they are free but fuck its hard:)

Latest knife finished, slightly scaled down Mamba model with some Copperhead model features.
Totara burl timber stabilized with black g10 liners and carbon pins.
Jimping was a first for me . D2 steel .

Just stunning Viper.
So out of the lock down I had time to design and get feedback from forum members on a small knife series which I thought would be handy.
The overwhelming favorite was a little drop point style hunting / utility knife which has being named the " Krait" ( gotta keep that snake theme going )
This knife also featured in the designs and it was totally different to anything else but I thought it would work and could be useful and appeal to the right hunter.
Turns out it was exactly what a member wanted and hit the go button.
Here's the result, D2 steel, full tang and full grind. Black / blue micarta handles with sky blue and black G10 liners and running carbon pins.
Blade is 85 - 90mm and feels very natural in the hand.
Another bloody awesome forum member to deal with , more like making knives for mates than customers.

I made a mini cleaver.
The handle is Elm burr.This is the first knife I have made,I bought some mosaic pins and plan to pin the handle on,more for looks than anything.
Loving the Totara burr on this knife by @viper. Birthday present for middle child end of Oct.

This knife is truly "alive in the hand" and best of all last night managed to catch up with @viper and we had a great yarn. Its the best of the forum when one can chuck ideas round, do deals and get a neat result.
I need to get a sheath made for it and bowl a big redskin over to try it!!
Just finished hunting knife, made from Japanese non stain steel cleaver.
Design inspired by Green river hunting knife.
Bur-wood scales made from wife's old fruit bowl.
Green micarta linings and brass pins.
Leather sheath made from old school bag.
Total cost less than $20 + a few afternoons fiddling around.

Finally finished this up, was meant to be black with a rust blued blade but couldn't get a consistent finish on the rust blue so after 4 rounds of re hand sanding I settled with a clean satin finish.

That transcends knives and is more in the realm of art. Add in the 0.005" behind the edge... that is something quite special.
Try sticking it in a pickle jar overnight, will come out with a nice even patina, don’t know what it does to the pickles but...Quote:

Here's one for the history buffs. A genuine Wilkinson sword fighting knife , 1st pattern , issued to my grandad in ww2.
From my understanding a rare animal nowadays as this first pattern was only produced in very limited numbers.

Not a knife, but its a cutter.
Been looking for a metal cut vertical band saw to cut blades to shape, but they are wicked expensive. The metal cut saws run at a much slower blade speed compared to the timber saws.
Decided to get an old tanner belt drive machine and gear it down. Seen a few done on youtube where they run a lay shaft and an additional pulley set to get the required reduction. Did some math and decided the best option was to replace the drive motor with a little geared three phase motor and a VSD.
Took 6 months to find a suitable bandsaw, and another couple of months to find a new second hand geared motor for 1/4 of the price of a new one, and a little VSD off a guy on TM selling them out of Cambridge. Then I came up with the clever idea of maintaining the original motor as well as the geared motor, mounted parallel to each other, with a quick change belt so I can run either the original timber cut speed, or in 10 seconds change over to metal cut speed. The motors are sitting on a cantilevered hinged plate, so the weight of both motors is enough to tension the belt with no other attachments.
Wired it all up with a change over switch between the two motors and a couple of three pin outlets for lights. Fired it all up last night and there were now sparks or smoke and the power didn't trip in the shed - must have got the wiring right first time :thumbsup:

Not cheap, but an off the shelf metal cut vertical bandsaw is over $3k from the dealers, and mine can cut at steel or wood speed, just need to change the blade.
I recon you could pick up a donner saw for half the price (I probably paid too much for mine), and same with the motor (you don't need a geared one, just use the correct size pullies), but a budget of $1,500 would be a good place to start.

this is mine built in 1942 for the war made as a 240v unit in usa and shipped to wellington for the american war effort .
it has full variable speed , self feed ,chip blower and blade welder its my favorite thing in the shed .
i think @viper want to marry it he speends so much time with it:D
