Thread: silky pocket boy

After past failures with buck and gerber folding/retractable saws thought I would try a pocket boy 170. which model is best? red handle 7 tpi- Black Handle , 8.5 tpi Yellow Handle 17 tpi not overly worried about cutting bone, i have heard that the yellow one can do this, but may be too fine for general green wood cutting?

I have the next size up, a F180 in the red handle. Good for general pruning and cutting. Dunno if Id want more TPI never tried though.

Go with the Black (medium) if your not too bothered about cutting bone. Great saws!

Yep that's what I have too. Great saw.

I sometimes work with professional weed-control crews, cutting & pasting vines like Old mans beard and Banana passionfruit.
Most of the workers prefer Silky saws, I use both Pocketboy 170 and Gomboy 240. Spare blades are available too.

I have one of the red F180's too and rate it

It's lighter and longer than the sandvik folder it replaces and cuts faster too

Levin Timbersaws have an online catalogue - I went to the shop once and started drooling a bit but that could just be me

Anyone know of a shop that stocks these around Wellington?

as an alternative I've been using a Oska (I think its ) 300mm folding pruning saw, that I got as part of a deal with my Lawnmower from Parklands. It's outrageous the stuff I've managed to cut up with that for firewood, tree pruning etc etc.

I'm a bit cheap and this really worked well for me good blade lock out and has lasted already a year and not blunt at all - I Know the Silky's are good also but I had the option of essentially getting this for free. I seem to remember 30-40 dollars retail price.

Yup. The yellow handled Silky are great.

Have a look at the bahco folding saw, if I am thinking of the silky your questioning the bahco is longer and cuts on both strokes where correct me if I am wrong but the silky only cuts in one direction?

You are right. Silky only cuts pulling towards you.

The Bacho does seem to be a good saw not sure how it compares in price, used one in my job seemed to last and the locking mechanism was solid enough, I think they are 7tpi.

Ive cut a few smaller trees down with my Bahco folder now, does the trick well, is lasting well, locking mech works good, and from memory it was less than $15 from M10.

The silky would have to be be light and day different for me to warrant the cost difference, and i find it hard to imagine it could be that much better.

That's a good price @GWH I've only seen them for around $40 at Bunnings.

Got both the Silky pocket boy and the F180. The pocket boy is nice on the hands for all day use but the F180 is cheaper to run blades wise. A mate has the Bacho and he will go through 2-3 blades to my 1 using it the same amount of time.
