I've been looking at getting a silky saw for a while now but I can't justify the $70-80 price tag.
Can anyone here recommend any alternatives that are reasonably priced ($30-40).

Depends what you plan on using it for. . . ?
Would be mainly used for pruning back kanuka/gorse trunks/pine/scrub - 3-4" diameter max.
I've got a Bahco pruning saw (6 inch blade) and it works magic, not sure on how much they cost though as i got my one for free.

Yes, Bacho are great. Mines a fixed blade one and a bit longer. Had several and have nearly cleared the Ruahines single handed with them :)
If you get a Silky, they come in a couple of grades of coarseness. The most course is best.

The Bahco folding pruning saw sounds like what I'm after, I will see if I can track down one this afternoon.
I must say some people in the states have far too much time on there hands... much like a certain nz painter (how the hell do you find these things?). :D

You never even cut the branches down - it forever seems to be me doing the hard yards :)
Thats because I've learnt the limitations of a Leatherman 2" saw, your still getting there... theres an easier way. :D

Found one of the Bahco's folding pruning saws at Mitre 10 today, it came with a free blade.
Will give it a work out this weekend, work/weather pending.

You will be amazed at what you can do with them. Its hard to stop once you get going :)
I bought one of the bahco models and keep it in the truck. It's excellent for camp work. Bought because one off-roading we got a branch stuck under the chassis. Good value.Quote:
