    Sleeping pads!

Ya best sleeping mat, side or back sleeper and pros and cons? And any info!

Looking at finally getting one after getting pissed off with sleeping on the ground, and have watched review after review, but would rather opinions on here!

    Cheers fellas

I use a thermarest neo air Xtreme it's awesome never touch the ground and never get cold. Just get the Xtra large as it's wider.

well a closed cell foam one is cheap, and better than hard ground alone..... oldschool lilos were priceless, the modern lightweight versions are good but not as thick. Ive popped two of the modern ones and ended up sleeping on all my spare cloths... not ideal.you cant beat a camp stretcher if close to the car.

Exped synmat 7 winter. I tried out a few different ones in bivouac a couple of years ago and picked my one because it was the quietest to move around on, others sound like lying on a chip packet. Little bit heavier than some of the others and if I had more money I might have got the downmat. It's more comfortable if not blown up too tight.

I have used cheap closed cell, a Kathmandu inflatable a couple of expeds and a klymit.
The klymit one is pretty good and not too expensive. The osed cell ones are cheap and uncomfortable. Expeds are good but getting expensive.
    I'd recommend the klymit.
    Something like this.

We've got a few Klymit mats in the family. No punctures or complaints so far, but the camping has been pretty tame.

I have both a Exped synmat and a neoair xtherm. The exped I've had for 5-6 years and does the job, i find it uncomfortable to side sleep, never felt cold, it's small and narrow so you come off it easy, the blow up bag thingy is brilliant.

The xtherm (older model)I picked up off here about 4 months ago and used it 3 or 4 times. It's a large and I find it a lot more comfortable. I haven't tried it in winter yet so can't comment on warmth, it is noisey but only while getting in and out of your bag and blowing it up is a pain.

If I was buying new I'd go neo air for the extra comfort but it comes at twice the price of the exped

Thermarest Neoair Xlite is hard to beat, if you need higher thermal insulation - like winter snow camping, then the Xtherm.

For winter use you need to look for an R5 rating or higher

    Same as above with thermorest
But if going in for longer or near vehicle
Helinox cot light camp stretcher for next level comfort
Just a modern 1kg version of the old camp stretcher
For winter use I add a foam mat and flannel sheet that ties to the legs and keeps the mat in place
No cold spot in bottom of sleeping bag then
Added benefit of being able to store rifle under the camp for
This is the absolute perfect ( but expensive ) sleeping system and will never puncture and go flat

And a warning to the wise

If you suspect your blow up mattress has a leak
Don't blow it up and leave it to see if it goes flat without putting some similarly weighted object on it overnight
I blew mine up and left it unweighted overnight and it seemed fine
Went to use it mid winter on hard packed snow and had a very uncomfortable night with all my cloths packed under me

On the up side the genuine thermorest repair kits do a very good predominant repair if you do it correctly

I can vouch for the Klymit mats too - very comfortable as inflatable mats go. The one I have isn't the lightest, but the comfort and most importantly insulation it provides from the ground is invaluable!
