The NZ pro NZtopomaps and most likely the free version uses LINZ/National images that you can switch to from the topomap. IMO the Linz is superior to satellite images because they aerial images, so taken from a plane and not he edge of space, so a lot better clarity when zooming in close to look at detail. Only problem with this is you often cant see jack in the shadows.
