Hi What is everyone using for Spot lighting torches now. Is the Maxtoch still the preferred.
i was using an led lenser, one day gadgetman turned up with a maxtoch that blew it away. i now use a olight javelot and its great. never compared it to a maxtoch though.
I have an olight javelot. It's been great - decent runtime off of a pair of 18650's. Piercing the darkness has some really good stuff though. If you don't need it to be rifle mountable and don't mind a bit of bulk, the 3x21D is next level.
I have a few modified maxtoch torches with the battery tube removed, and an external battery wired up.
Still a maxtoch torch, but with all-night runtime.
I find the beam has plenty of reach, there is enough spill so I can walk around using the light, and the colour of the beam is a lot better than all of the cool white LED lights out there.
The are lights with more lumens, more throw, smaller, lighter etc, but I feel like the older maxtoch lights just nailed the hunting sweetspot.

Check out the range from this site
@Night_Into_Day can answer your questions and recommend what's best.
I have the torch in the link, very bright with a narrow beam, you may want something slightly wider depending on what range you are shooting.
I have one of the Convoy L21B torches with green led. Really excellent torch for mounting on rifle. Great range and brightness, often have set on lower settings. Good battery life. Maxtoch I had was good but found this better. Gave maxtoch to my boy, probably wrecked it by now. Still use Convoy reasonably often when I haven’t got my NV gear with me, still bloody effective.
Maxtoch Maxtoch & maxtoch……
As above,
I have a green L21B from here, can be a bit narrow on low power but high is too much for up close.
Also use a Lenser HM11 head torch but it's now been religated to use for walking and causal looking around at shorter ranges. Scanning across distance the L21B in green it the one. (well it was when I got it 2 years back)
1700 mtr range.

I just bought a couple of torches from piercing the darkness, I have to say delivery was super fast, I ordered them Monday afternoon and they arrived today.
I’ve had a little play in the backyard and I’m impressed… I’m looking forward to spotlighting and putting them through their paces.
I bought a Convoy T4 and a L21B (2000 lumens)
After reading this thread, I picked up a Convoy L21B SFT40 2000 lumen. And after some googling, I decided to get a Sofirn SP40 headlamp.
So far I am quite happy with the spotlight and headlamp in my backyard. I should be able to take them out spotlighting soon and I will have to comment on how they go.
I got them directly from China including the batteries for $70 for the L21B and $48 for the SP40. I would love to support New Zealand owned businesses, but personally, I can't justify spending an extra $140 on the same products.
Yeah, feel free to import stuff yourself. The thing with Convoy and Sofirn is that they sell at wholesale rate to everyone, I get no further discount. Nitecore, Olight etc sell at retail price to support retailers. If Convoy and Sofirn sold at retail then they would be around what I sell them for. When you factor in import fees, high bulk shipping fees, GST, tax, and making it worth while, then I'm not actually making as much money as some think. I'd make way more money selling these mainstream brands, but I've never been in it for the money, I just enjoy providing reasonable prices with good service, after all it was orginally my hobby.
I also carry out all repairs, upgrades, a thorough quality control check, and provide any modifications needed. For example, the Convoy L21B's reflector in the current batch is out of focus causing the range to be considerably less, I spend up to an hour making custom gaskets to remedy this issue. The L21B with Green NM1 LED has a range of 1700m with my mod and only 1300 ish metres without.
I work alongside Convoy to design these models. The L21B was my baby, designed specially as a lightweight mountable model at an affordable price, compared to what else is available here.
You do great work Jacob, the changes you make from factory standard turn a good torch into a great torch, Also love the backup service you offer with repairs and LED changes if needed. Its well worth a little extra money to get that service.
I love my l21b I got off Jacob, I got it in red and it’s brilliant, I’ve used to use white light but it can startle deer and they take off - I never have that problem with red light. It’s a bit harder to spot them at further distances than using white but I also find the reflection in the eyes easier to see with red light instead of white.
Maxtoch screwed over the guys here that did all the work for them.
Won't get any more.
Piercing the Darkness is local and way better to deal with. Plus hes a member on here.
Just ordered another cm8... this 1 green
I've never used a green torch before. In the past I went from a white light straight to a red one in an attempt to reduce the animals reaction to the light. Last week I was in the Motu on a Hare hunt. The Hares did not like the white lights and tended to run as soon as they were light up. Then one of the guys used a green light, the Hares didn't really react to the green light and the range on the green vs the red I am used to was impressive.
Its good to mix things up a bit with different colour lights. The animals will get light shy after a time. Green does pick up eye reflection nicely, takes a bit of getting used to to shoot under though.
I think that colour range thing is that human eyes are more sensitive to green than red. The same goes for game animals, they tend to be less sesitive to red than green but our eyes are more sesitive to green.
So if hunting game that gets regually spotlighted you are probably better off with red, but if looking for more distance or game that gets less pressure then green may be a better option.

This has been bugging me since you imported directly from China and probably aren't familiar of what to check. I'd recommend following this list for your safety and to ensure your torch continues to function properly.
1. Check both retaining rings are tight around the driver and tail springs.
2. Check that the two screws are tight that hold the LED's MCPCB down.
3. Buy 99% Isopropyl Alcohol and using a Q tip gently clean the LED's surface. Do this too hard and you'll break the bond wires.
4. Make sure you use button top batteries if you plan on mounting the L21B.
I clean the LED on every unit because there's often left over flux that ends up burning into the LED. The screws are often left loose so the reflector centers the LED when tightening down the bezel. I've had units arrive with the screws rattling around or ready to come out, if this happens it'll create a short circuit. Be careful when reassembling and tightening the bezel, do it too hard and you'll risk tearing the LED from the board.
Convoy is a DIY brand, so if your light fails you'll more than likely be sent parts to solder in yourself.
I recommend button top batteries for mounting because the recoil causes the spring to dent in the positive terminal. There's a pressure relief vent behind it that you don't want blocked. I've seen torches explode due to battery issues with windows blown out and shrapnel lodged in walls and limbs. If you're not super careful you'll end up with a pipe bomb. Lithium safety is super important. Years ago a person died by having a battery explode inside an Olight torch sending it down the guy's throat, he was holding it in his mouth. It was user error by using two batteries of unequal voltage.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
To everyone else, I really appreciate the support on here, it's always nice to see that everyone is happy with the products and service I provide.
I too have just purchased a L21b in green to hopefully take the maxtoch’s place in the night shooting kit.
Can’t wait to try it out
