Storing Gear In The Roof Space

I'm keen to hear peoples thoughs on storing gear in the attic, especialy duting this time of year.

When i bought my rain coat back in the day, i was adviaed to never leave it in a car on a sunny day as the seam seal would be compromised. The heat will affect the glues and coatings and the coat will be less effective and robust. I figure tents, pacs sleeping bags ect would have similar systems so would need to be out of 40+c heat in a roof space during summer.

Is there truth to this? Doea heat affect DWR? Seam seals, ect? What do you guys know. I need a system that works.

I wouldn't. Big temperature variations in roof space.

In an insulated box with a large thermal mass perhaps? Knock together a few sheets of 3" polystyrene, plywood floor (insulated underneath) and store alongside some 20l water containers. Designate the water your Civil Defense disaster supply, two boxes ticked.

i have been in christchurch roofspace knocking 60 in summer. dont waste your time.
and yet electricians still install alarm systems in them. guess they want the exorbitant callout fees

Yeah I use the roof for a bit of storage, and have had gear up there, but not over summer. Just trying to find the best solution. I have a garage getting rebuilt in the new year so that may have to be the best bet, provided i can keep the mice out of it.

My chainsaws leak like schoolgirls on football field stored high up in the garage as it's so warm,have had decoys change shape with the heat in same place.

I would have thought your soil temp would fluctuate. But yeah i think the roof space isnt the best for gear.

Good place to run a dehydrator or a biltong box maybe..

According to the police firearms website it's all good to store your firearms in the roof.

The ground probe is 200mm deep, and at that depth it is approx 12 hours out of sync from air temp

That's just so they don't have to worry about bending them when they get hold of them, stored in the roof they end up pre-bent when the plastic bits melt in the heat! :thumbsup:
