If they are single swags and you have a double cab or Prado or similar, and there's only one or two of you, the best place is on the back seat. You don't want your swags somewhere the Otago dust can get to them, gritty dusty swags aren't nice. As long as a ute tray is clean and dry you're good. On the roof is to be avoided at all costs to my mind. Swags aren't for everyone but when you've got them as part of an integrated vehicle based setup, you ain't gonna want to go back to a shitty little hiking tent again. The integral mattress, heavy canvas and general weatherproofness makes most "flap flap" tents a right pain in the arse, when you're used to a swag.
