Thread: Using Drones

Hi All

I might get slaughtered for even asking this, but seeing as I'm fairly new to the hunting community and don't quite know all the do's and don't, was wondering if anyone uses drones to scout out areas? Not to find animals as such, but more to check terrain and access points etc.
I suppose in a lot of ways its not much different to using a helicopter, which is not something I can afford at this stage.

My thoughts are that, theres a lot of technology available and being used today, that weren't used in the past. Are drones another one of them, or should it not be used at all?

I think the one aspect going to kill your plans is that generally, they may NOT be operated over any land not owned by the operator , without permission of the land owner. of that land.

In New Zealand, the regulation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) does not distinguish between commercial and recreational operations, but rather sets out standard operating requirements for any UAVs that weigh less than 55 pounds. UAVs over this weight or operations that will exceed the standard operating requirements are subject to a certification process. Permission must be obtained to fly in certain areas, and the consent of the relevant persons must be obtained before flying over people or private property. Other relevant rules with respect to flying UAVs over public land or spaces may be established by local authorities and the Department of Conservation.

Bloody annoying in my opinion! But here’s a few tips, just so I’m not a huge kill joy.
1 don’t fly it in high winds, you won’t get it back.
2 don’t fly it over or near other people. No one wants too be filmed without permission. Even if your not filming them everyone knows it’s got a camera so they feel your filming them!
3 don’t fly too close to animals, seen a few videos where deer have seen, heard the drone and bolted.
4 why not so long as your not braking any laws.
5 goggle earth might be more affective. Also easier to carry and less fragile. Ie deer on back plus rifle plus drone add NZ native bush = broken drone?
6 for small areas it might be ideal. ie a gully creek you want to checkout to see if there’s any small slips.
There’s my take.

Even if you follow all the rules, drones are noisy and likely to spook nearby game, royally pissing off any hunters in the area.

Do you really think that the tourists coming to nz and taking some drone picture shot from say wairere falls, lake tekapo and other places in nz are going to get in trouble with doc? most drone users don't care, that is the reality of it.

That reminds me when the very first gsm mobile phones were arriving on the market ( about 1993 ish in Europe), most people who were not a phone owners were finding them annoying, they would ring at any time during movies, restaurant time...etc.
Now that pretty much anybody has one, we are used to live with them, tolerate them but also in most case try to behave with them so that we don't annoy our surroundings. There are laws which prohibit its usage in certain places.

The law although ban you to use them while driving , but great portion of users don't care . I don't say it is good, it is bad but it is happening nevertheless .

Me too, i thought i saw one a few months ago.... it was an air liner! on a funny angle and far enough away that it looked a bit like one.

As said earlier, providing you aren't annoying anybody then it may well be the quickest way to get a look up the surrounding area but you've still got to carry it in so fragility is important

Have heard that they are being used to monitor pest control effectiveness in new pine plantations.

What did I expect? Of course there is a disabling amount of red tape.. thanks for the info anyways @Kiwi Sapper
