managed to sort out the auto light feature but still not able to turn off the auto updates...

yep that did the trick, had to download the manual for this specific watch.

manual says to hold the 'reset' / adjust button down when in the mode for updating the time frequency thing. holding the button down does NOTHING tried all the other buttons and they dont work either. its got me scratching my head

I have to admit I am a bit of a watch geek.

I don't like dress watches as I never dress up, but I like my military/practical type watches.

Have had a Suunto core for around 7 years that now for some reason chews thru new batteries in a month or less.
Time to replace it.

Just bought a Suunto Traverse Alpha-stealth for $450 nz delivered.

Cheapest I have seen anywhere.
I liked the new Garmins but they are around 800 bucks with the same features as the Suunto.

Few fellas I work with have the Garmin or Suunto traverse. The Suunto rates higher with them.

@R93 mine started eating batteries as well, screen was getting past it as well. Have had 2 suuntos and been 'ok' time to change to CASIO as had an old g shock for 10+ years and nothing wrong with it.

The recall on the rangeman is a bit difficult to work out, graph on the main screen is great untill there are large changes in pressure and the chart doesn't show much more than the last few hours

Yeah I could understand having a couple batteries that were on the shelf a while but on my fifth battery and all are lasting the same amount of time.

I don't like the Casios as the face is cluttered compared to the larger Suunto. My eyesight isint what it used to be either.

Having a large face the GPS, good sensors and moon phase is what swayed me to the Suunto.

Casio F-91W.

Digital watch is what I go for at least for now.
- cheapish casio 100M model you can shower and swim with.
- don't set it to beep on the hour as not good for stalking.
- note digital displays no good with polarised sun glasses.
- my casio has borderline digit heights for my ageing vision, but I'm unkeen on going for a large block of wrist plastic looking like it came out of the Lego box. May return to the analogue display again for the last reason. Had a timex analogue watch with that blue illuminator face on it (beats luminescent hands) never let me down but the brass case started losing its chrome or whatever was on it so it went in the box.
- My problem with analogue watches is that many, even moderately expensive brands, have the second hand resting between the lines, really peeves me as I use it all the time for checking pulses. Digital second displays always stop right at the number...

New models are always pricey, it's why I went for the rangeman not the mudmaster

I've been looking at these too but I was put off by the battery life. Wife told me to "get over it" and just accept that these kind of watches need to be recharged regularly - she has a rechargeable Garmin and finds it works ok for her, but I was worried that a week in the bush using the GPS functions might find you with a dead watch when you need it most.

$450 delivered is a very good price. Could you PM me the info on that please?
