Decisions heh, well like kudu says a fold up totally waterproof but not breathable one for when it's raining cats and dogs and a swandri for most other stuff is a good combo, remember pure 100% wool will retain 80% of its insulating properties even when wet.

I do have an old Macpac alpine jacket that is fantastic for when it's hosing and or ice or snowy but don't think they make em like that anymore, cactus make some extreme alpine jackets though that could do the trick...

I use my mountaineering Arc'teryx for tops, not camo though, dont do a lot of 'tops hunting' so its not an issue........

have a British NATO goretex camo jacket for downpours!!!!! and a cheapie ridgeline for the bush as its made from that 'non rustle' fabric......

Really depends on the hunting you do....would not go 'Alpine' in either of the the bottom two......
While I might not be as good as I once was, Im as good once as I ever was!

Absolutely love my Bush Buck jacket, takes up half my pikau but it's long and waterproof and quiet still. Warm to a point but not too hot if wanting to walk with it still on. Pit zips do wonders.

I lived in that jacket when I was in Wellington.

Warm wise, that Bush Buck and my Mac PAC down hooded vest is unbeatable for cosey factor. It's New Zealand, layer up

Hey you write for the magazines don't you? I've read your articles and love your writing. I particularly love the fact you discuss things some of the boys might be too macho to discuss. Of note was your article discussing how you felt killing animals. I really struggled with this when I shot my first goat a few months ago. May struggle with this aspect of hunting. Not too worried tho, if I can't hack it, might take up nature photography and use hunting skills to get close to the animals for photos. Camera kit would weigh a little less than Bow or Rifle too I'd say, LOL.

Think you are probably one of the most talented writers in the hunting mags currently. We're probably on a similar journey, being a bit new to it, although I'd say you're a lot more experienced than me.

Anyway, all the best, look forward to your next article, keep up the great work.

Regarding pit dumps, the XTR has huge ones which made no discernable difference. AND I tried just about everything under this jacket without joy. When it was bone dry and I had my primaloft jacket under it, I felt cold and damp and generally chilled in about 4-5 minutes, removed the XTR and felt warmer and drier in about 2 minutes.

Basically if it's warm the XTR is a giant, hot, stuffy plastic bag and if it's a bit cold, it works like a heat exchanger and chills you to the bone. I do think the shell isn't beading water off any-more, so that is probably a key issue. Don't mind being hot and a bit sweaty, just the cold factor I'm not keen on.

Currently considering : Stoney Creek Rock Pullover and a cheap ($50-$100), lightweight, non breathable, packable 100% waterproof raincoat.

Spoke to a customer in a shop today and he swore by his, reckoned he wore it all day in light rain and was warm n cosy. Not too many negative comments on Stoney Creek stuff, so maybe one of their Hunting jackets, but...mmmmmmm

    Anyway I'm raving.

    Cheers Campbell

Love my Bushbuck. Im a gear-queer and I've got too much hunting gear and softshells for everyday wear.
I havent used my Bushbuck in the pouring rain, but used it the other week the Cant. Foothills and was great.
I do have a NZDF Goretex jacket I "found" from an old army flatmate. Amazingly waterproof but need a insulation layer underneath.
I also have lighter weight wind layers too. I just love my jackets.

Well, maybe i got a good one but i have a hunters element xtr jacket and i found its quite good. Dont wear it much as dont have the need but ive had it in pissing rain in murchison and it kept me nice and dry and warm. Winter just gone i hunted with it after some heavy snow. While in the bush the wind got up, sleet, cold as, then it started snowing hard out. Never considered coming out as the xtr jacket kept me nice and cosy and carried on hunting for the day in awful condiations. So its a past for me, and i did get it cheap so dont regret buying it.

The Sitka stormfront gear takes some beating IMO.

I just ordered the Kuiu guide jacket on sneezes advice. Thought it was a good price as well on the black Friday sale. Got a set of gators thrown in and should be under any customs bullshit.
    Bit of a wait but.

those Sitka coats are bloody expensive, but in reality what advantage does a Sitka shell coat have over a standard mountaineering brand coat?

and lets face it when its pissing down you aint giving two shits whether your being quiet or not. more important you want to be dry and warm!

Exactly. Which is why I said earlier I just use a good warm coat and have one of those pack away raincoats that are 100% waterproof. Lighter, don't hold water and windproof!

I wouldn't be without my Swazi " One Tough Mutha ", in fact I have two. It's purely a Goretex shell, has kept me dry on the Kaweka tops and in pissing down gales around Puysegur Point in Fiordland.
For warmth layer I underneath it. It's noisy, so what, I need to be dry. It rolls up into its hood.
I bought both off TM, still with the stores tags on them.

I guess we're drawn to the clothing racks in " hunting " stores, and begin our search there.

Resist the urge and as others have said, start looking in the likes of the Bivouac stores or online.

After sales service is no use to you when you're hypothermic.
