Thread: Will COVID-19 change your purchasing decisions?

World is changing and won't be the same. Very easy for folks to lose their jobs and much harder to replace them.

Supporting NZ businesses has never been so important. If its available locally we should spend our $ local. Even if there is a reasonable premium.

What are your thoughts?

Totally agree, I have alwaysbteied to purchase from nz business, have one or two minor purchases offshore but very minimal.

So yeah I will be, dont mind paying a premium as you get the service as well.

Unless I'm in tha country and am in the market for some gear....

I think a lot of spending habits will change due to the lack of income for so many more people expected to lose jobs.

Also after a month of living in isolation, I think a lot of people will also learn what is essential and what is luxury / nice to haves....

Hospo is definitely in the do do. Even when the lock down is over, how many tourists will be here to use hotel / motel rooms? And how many people will actually venture out to restaurants?

I agree, they are years off recovery. Domestic tourism is incredibly important.

Yep, im in tourism hospitality (75% ? International) . Changed spending.... thats putting it mildly.

Just hope next summer kiwis are out travelling and exploring their own country instead of being overseas

Agree with the sentiments. I don't mind paying a bit more to use local business, but not 10x more, especially when they are only a middle man selling Chinese-made goods. Customer service could do with some attention. It's often piss poor with a fuck you attitude towards customers.

Yeah I totally support everyone having domestic Holliday's. Travel is a no go, in or out. No point locking down then having a porous border. Luckily our country is awesome. Staycation and buy as much locally made product as possible

Yes, I said reasonable premium deliberately...no one likes gouging! But companies like Twin Needle, Cactus etc will never out compete China on price but value is still there.

I have always bought from nz shops for everything I buy I might pay a bit more but I'm keeping a nz company alive and providing employment in our country there are other advantages as well like if there's warranty issues etc people have pretty fuked attitudes towards this they go and buy overseas and then expect the local guy to sort out any problems instead of going back to where they got it from and would be the first to go crying to mummy if we had those shops close here

I'll put my hand up and say I am/was a global buyer (without the mummy issues, she is excommunicated). My purchasing drivers have now changed in-line with yours.

I’m with you re gouging - when you can import two items at less cost than buying one of the items locally it’s a bit hard to swallow.

But otherwise I support local industry/ business.

Shit our spend is way less than it used to be......more to spend on hunting gear I guess

Supporting local business on items made exclusively in NZ I support completely , but for everything else,, why would you go to work to pay extra for items when you don’t have to, for some greedy NZ company the road to pocket your hard earned cash?
Reloading gear, Boots, Binos, scopes, tents, clothes...every hunting related item, are all at least 25% and sometimes as much as 400%+ cheaper overseas than at any major hunting store in New Zealand. Moneys hard to come by

Definitely buying more nz made gear but struggling to not by online when it's made overseas. You can see the markup when you search around.

Big thing for me recently is buying more second had stuff, quality second hand is often much better than cheap new. And will tend to last a lot longer, also been making a few more things myself where I can.

Where do you try on your boots and clothes, look through optics, handle equipment? At the manufacturers premises or in NZ? There's 2 issues at work here in what people term as gouging. Manufacturers who want a wholesaler to push their product regionally, but then are unscrupulous and online sell to that region at not much above price to wholesaler. And then wholesalers and retailers that have to stock multiple product lines in varying sizes/configurations with all the associated costs and still make profit. Just for someone to walk in,have the convenience of trying said item and buying off shore.
