Just wondering how guys who have zoleos are finding them and pros and cons vs inreach devices. Looks like it will be a while till the likes od SpaceX will be cheap and accessible. Not looking to replace a plb just looking for a way to get weather forecasts or contact transport. I miss the mountain radio's

I changed from the Inreach to a Zoleo about 2 years ago, stays with either my truck or my gear all the time. Im technologically inept, like big time, and I can still use it. Mate has one and also has a heap that he issues to his work crew if they are out of coverage. I like it, its simple, easy to send an "Im ok" message to contacts, and easy to send a text message. Weather forecast comes up for your location and is usually pretty accurate. And if your like me and and dont really wanta talk to people much until I get home, the battery lasts a bloody long time.

With regard to the zoleo plans the cheapest is 35 a month. I read in some posts from a year or so back that you could put your account/dedicated phone number into a holding state for low $ per month and then reactivate is this still the case? Nothing leapt out at me about this on the Zoleo nz website.

Yep, can pause your account and they charge something like 4$/month to keep your number and email live

By way of comparison Garmin changed (increased) their inreach subscription plans a couple of months ago. The advertised basic plan moved from $20 to $30 and plans now range from $30 up to $480 per month (not kidding). But, under your account in explore.garmin.com under your Account / Plans & Devices / select Manage Plan / you can opt for "Inreach Enabled". This isn't listed as a plan on the public website (I couldn't find it). It is $15.50 NZD per month and cannot be suspended (unlike the old basic plan), and you pay for messages and weather updates - (like 10-15 cents a message). User pays. This suits me hunting a couple of days a month, and particularly when most top ridges you can get cellphone reception.
