20ga steel loads

Gidday Team.

Asking on behalf of a mate whom I'll be sharing the blind with for opening weekend.

So he's got a 20ga rem 1100 with a 2 3/4" chamber. Absolute honey of a gun but for steel loads we've got 3 boxes of the gamebore 2 3/4" 24gr no 5s in the yellow box.

However as we are river shooting was thinking of trying Rio blue steel 4s, is there other loads worth considering like the federal blue box in 4s? Or is there a not stupidly pricey Bismuth option? I've been searching far and wide and so far the Rio blue steel seems to be the best unless I'm missing something?

Thought the blue box federal came in 2 3/4" from memory but was wrong so apologies in advance

sorry mate the only 20 gauge steel load i have any expwrience with is the black cloud 3 inch2,s on gees and that was semi satusfactory.
if your a patient shot with good distance radar theres no reason trap loads of 5 steel wont surfice.
if the theory most guns shoot 6 or7 lead well carries over for thier steel counterparts.
ive used lead trap/skeet 7,s on nightbponds/ shoots the reasoning bieng if my old peepers clock them in the fading light theyre close

We have got basically 4 options, winchester, rio blue steel, federal or fiocchi.

Just getting a box of rio and fiocchi to pattern and whichever does the best will be the ones we buy I think.

In all fairness I did some scouting and have a fair idea that the shots will be between 20-40y so I tend to think the 5s would do just fine. Thanks again

The Remington is a proper 20 gauge (as opposed to the Brownings which are almost a 16g) Anything bigger than 5 shot should be patterned carefully as a lot won't pattern larger shot sizes well.

I've used the fiochi and it's not bad. Have to pick your shots and decoy them in well. Used Winchester 2 years ago and had some good kills on parry's. Never patterned them but think it would be worthwhile. I was either smoking them or clean missing. Guess that's the limitations when it's only 24grams of shot. Used 4/5 shot

Have 8 pkts of 3" 4-5 shot Mary Arms 20 gauge if anyone is interested, have sold my 3" chambered 20g and only have a 23/4" 20g left.

try ELEY 20g steel .as a matter of interest RIO is manufactured in spain -both components and then the loaded cartridges .

however


RIO industries also export components to the UK where they are assembled and marketed under the ELEY brand. I picked up a pkt of 25 steel 2 3/4 32gm for $29.99 @H&F locally last week .



my personal choice for both trap and gamebirds is UK "Hull" ammo DTL100 DTL300 for clays and Solway Magnum 34gm 3" for geese &ducks in my s/a 12g.its a bird stopper allright .
the only problem is a scarcity of supply. across the complete range .

I'd have a close look at that ammo, it's the right price and spec for the Eley vip LEAD load. As far as I'm aware the only 20ga Eley steel available in NZ is their vip steel 24gm.
Probably pay to check before opening and take it back for them to sort out if needed.

It does. Thats what I have been shooting and still have some at home. 2 3/4 inch 7/8 of and ounce doing 1425 fps

In addition to the Federal 2 3/4” load, Winchester Drylock SuperSteel in 2 3/4” is another good one to try. Same 1425fps velocity, 3/4 ounce etc.

thats how i know Igot tripped up on exactly that 2/52 ago,ending up returning to H&F to exhange lead for steel load in 12g 23/4 32 gm.guncity certasinly stocked rio 20g steel in both 2 3/4 24gr load and 3"28gr load eithewr way a phone call wont do any harm and it saves juice .
