inserts....elcheaphos are only chamber length long and they pattern off the .12ga barrel but velocity will be poor as no barrel length to gain it....make insert 12" long and it works a treat. only fired one shot in anger from my .410 insert but the rabbit at 20 yards got peppered just fine n dandy.pellets through n through so velocity must be ok.

if the books have it correct you get about 1" of spread per yard....a barrel is nearly a yard long so the 410 shot will be collecting barrel of .12ga and be bumped back into tighter pattern...my old redneck adaptor patterned really well at 25 yards through .12ga full choke.

You could just use a 12g and slip in either a 410 or 20g chamber adapter? They work find for bird or buck shot. Slugs are a waist of time though and are too inaccurate to use effectively.

shoot a few sixes this arvo, first shot was a magpie couldn't help myself, then my boy shot at a few pine cones targets just to get him used to shooting it and what its about. On the way home i spotted a cat sunning him self on the river bank so he got shot aswell. went around to the other side and couldn't find him. Boy enjoyed him self, will get him out again this week and shoot a bit more. Cant see him really getting the swing of things straight away but he will enjoy him self this season.

The English did a lot of shot size testing on 410.

No6 gives the best patterns accross all hull lengths, four ten, four long and mag

strangley enough none of my .410s really shone with 6s....each gun is different. Bill Axbey in his book "the bird hunters" sings praises of on open choked gun using #8s....at the sub 25yard range where the wee gun shines it makes sense.
winchester sell a good clay target load of #9s that would do at a pinch....as said earlier be aware there are 2 1/2" shells with LESS than half n oz of shot in them....

I have always considered the 410 an experts gauge not a beginners. But I admit that at around age ten some kids find even a 20 gauge hard to hold.

stick to 25yards and its a great wee gun..... the insert will be coming with me opening weekend for my daughter to use finishing off woundies from the boat.our son got so good at doing it with a baikal .410 we didnt even bother trying to do so with the .12s....home loads,mixture of #6/7/8s in a 3" hull 3/4ox loads not too hot.
if you do reload for the wee gun buckshot is piece of piss to do and really honks along...

@Micky Duck does multiple shot sizes effect the pattern at all? I've always wondered how that would work out.

well it worked....for a positive way.I figured the heavier stuff would do the work and the smaller stuff help fill in the pattern... duplex loads were all the rage at one stage.
