About LinkBacksI think "backing" was encouraged on the grouse moors when you might not be able to see a dog on point due to the ground contour but you could see the dog between you and the one on point so if it "backed" the one on point you would know to go over there so to speak.
Not sure that makes sense at all but its my interpretation
