Thread: Duck shooting in the Manawatu

Does anybody know of some good places to shoot around the Manawatu? Public or private is good.

I’ve lived here a while but typically go back and forth to the Waikato for the month of May for duck shooting.

I’ll still be shooting mainly in the Waikato but would be good to have somewhere to pop out to after work/weekends at home down here.

I have a bunch of supplies to build a maimai as well so if anybody knows of someone with some land with a pond they wouldn’t mind letting a round keen young shooter have a go at it’d be appreciated!

I shoot not far from Palmy. Can’t offer you any water but some good advice would be to go find the maize in the surrounding area.
There is plenty grown around the Manawatu. We shoot a shit load of mallards over the maize stubble after harvest each year.

Head to the nearest house and ask if they’re the landowner or know who the landowner is. Then ask if they’d let you shoot the stubble in return for some beers or whatever their poison is.

Unsure if you’ve got a layout blind and some full bodies, but they can be picked up second hand reasonably cheap. Bloody good fun shooting green heads over land. Plenty of parries normally show up if that’s what you’re into as well.
