    Duck shooting on public stream

    Hi Everyone,

New to the forum so hoping someone can help me out here. I have recently bought a place in the rangitikei district and have an amazing spot out then back of my block that looks directly over a public stream. Always seems to hold truckloads of mallards! Provided I have a game bird licence and the Mai Mai is on my land is there any other rules stopping me from being able to shoot ducks off it?

    Welcome Richy

From the info you've given it sounds okay, provided the shot doesn't carry onto someone else's private land.

doesn't matter if the mai mai is on your land , your firing zone and will it endanger or alarm anyone , ie walkers , fishers is the main thing .

So long as you have a safe firing zone , and your not disturbing stock (horses especially) ..would be best to let your neighbours know that it’s you shooting the creek. Take on board their thoughts to a point of curtisty ,

Pick up your shells , and try to recover any wounded birds ( getting permission from neighbours to enter their property) .

You dont need a game bird licence on your own land but anyone else in your party will.
Best to contact the neighbours and let them know and see if any other parties already shoot on the other side

There is more to it guys,
Game bird license is not required only if,

    - that particular land is OP primary or only residence.
    - The land is under OP name or OP parent or trustee
    - 1 more but I can't remember

“…the occupier of any land, and the spouse or partner and any
one son or daughter of the occupier, may, during an open season,
hunt or kill on that land without a licence (but subject to all other
restrictions imposed by game regulations.” The occupier of the land
is normally the owner if she/he personally resides on the land, but
this privilege can be transferred to farm manager or sharemilkers by
a written statement indicating such to Fish and Game if the owner
does not personally reside on the land. Note that the Act allows
for hunting by three people; the occupier, his/her wife/husband/
civil union partner or de facto partner and one son or daughter on
that land - but no other land.

If iwas you Id be going down and fossicking round the site to see any evidence of previous maimais /shooting etc .then contact neighbours within a 2km radius to sound them out-do they know any shooting activity around there etc etc and importantly whats their attitude to your proposal .based on tghis info then you can make the relvant decsions .all the rules&regs in the world are useless if you simply cant shoot it for reasons mentioned ,as weve seen many times in recent past.
