Falcon ammo seems like a good deal. Any comments on performance? I'm restricted to 2 3/4" shells in my old skb semi. The 35gr loads ok in #3 or 4#? Any comments on the lighter loadings?

I have some mates that shoot more ducks than most and they run falcon, will find out what loads they run
It's good nz made ammo I use #4 and shoot plenty of the 3 slabs I used I had 1 fail to fire, there isn't much difference from the 3 inch
Yep use 2 3/4 #4's for everything and its great, cannot fault it
Would have been through 10+ slabs by now without a single issue
Hard to find in auckland
Great lighter loads I saw the 30grm stuff on shelf in Ashburton this week, been looking for it every year first time I've seen it. I prefer a load of #3s but if on small pond the #4s would be ok too.
Seemed to be a pile of it at H&F in Dunedin earlier this week.
I had issues with the brass on falcon in the late 1990s, I assume this has been solved.
Don't use any other brand now, performance is more due to the operator than SR71 velocities and names like black cloud duckinator etc. No amount of pellets will do any good even if propelled at supersonic speeds if they're in the wrong place.
the only issue Ive ever struck was shooting high volume at rabbits as in a slab a night through a neglected maverick....the wee exractor hook would ride over rim on about every 20th shell..... there were a few that had a distinct slope rather than being square on front face... it was only on the plastic packaged bulk ammunition the cardboard boxed stuff was fine as had different brass, the cheddite brass has improved no end since then.... a bloody good clean sorted the maverick....
My issues were a flaw in both brass [U]and[U] the gun. It was so bad that I had to bail, and go into town to buy winchester about lunchtime on opening day. It was about 25 years ago.
the issues I mention was closer to 30 years ago LOL....
They are running #4 ultra steel 2 3/4
There was a time 20 odd years ago when our team at the Easter bunny shoot seemed to have a bad experience with it.
It seemed like it didn't quite have the punch at the other end like it should've.
Bunnies needed to be hit pretty solid otherwise they would bugger off. Usually noticed if you shot a couple up and looked for the first ones.
Otherwise it was my go to ammo.
I will say it does stick in my mossberg 500 chamber.
But I do have to do some proper testing on other ammo to make sure it's not the gun
A post on Kelly Country's FB page says "no Falcon in stock for duck season due to not being able to manufacture any". Huh? wonder what they mean.
Deadeye dicks got some, I know that
cleaning whats cleaning
if you had a 870 micky no shell is safe from the remy extractor
stuck or sideways it,l rip the head off and leave you nice needle nose pliar removable pieces. at the risk of repeating myself falcon 2 3/4 inch 40 gram lead 2,s no goose can avoid them.
when i was in the waikato with me late unc everybody used those plastic packs of falcon
i thought maybe because they were tight as fishes arses but it maybe they were a good load to.
that early fiocchi steel was shite and the first run of 2 3/4 inch b and p steel jammed everything but wait for it wait for it the remy 870.
still it did cost nme five minutes of hungry duck killin time
my mates winchester required a full breakdown and pliars and ramrod job
As an aside I did some testing on my 500 last year after it played silly buggers first shot of duck season.
Sharpened up the extractor and shallowed up the groove on the barrel.
It would still pull off the rim at times but it was leaving a dent in the bottom of the case. It was trying to get it out but still sticky.
Back on topic
Well I started this tread....and I lm happy for it to go off topic!. My son is running an 870 this year, so will be interesting to see how it goes. Plus, I'm kinda keen to replace my old skb, and pump guns are fun and cheap and reliable, and the new 870 field master looks pretty good.
Yep shortages on pistol and shottie powders
All we use is 35 gram 4 shot for steel and the 36 gram lead for stubble mallards.
I don’t bother with the steel 36 gram 3” stuff anymore. Pulled apart a 4 shot load and it only had half a dozen more pellets than the 35 gram load and is going slightly slower. Don’t really understand it to be honest.
the 3" steel #2s work very well ..... and funnily enough I didnt warm to the 35grm #4s???? weird as others really like them, maybe our lake shooting ranges are getting out there perhaps?? they do work very well on bunnies LOL.
well I cannot believe Im going to type this.....
the gunshitty 870 knock offs are a good solid reliable option.....parts interchange with my harrington and richardson pump...both recieves made by Hawk industries CHINA... barrels might be made elsewhere but parts seem interchangable..barrels definately are, tried it in May.
these are heavier than other brands but with steel loads..heavy=good pumps dont have gas action to soak up recoil like semis do.
And at the end of the day it's a pump action anyway isn't it
sorry micky but if you start woith 2 pos you still end up with a pos.
the gun city 870 is a poorly disguised rip off and not a good one
check one of thier chokes against a remy one.
heavy not very nice to look at or rack either.
no thanks i,l stick with a 2nd hand original tho i might go back to the 20 gauge
they sure arent any ferrari....but mate I cannot fault my H&R and its had a lot of hard use..my buddies ranger has too and neither of us have had an issue...as for heavy..mine has ANOTHER 11oz of lead shot stuck up its butthole......really makes it soft to shoot with 3" steel loads.mine is fitted with winchokes.....cause they fit and just work.
Popped into H&F Dunedin today. They have some falcon, not heaps. I got couple of packets of the 35gm 70mm to try. Look like that was all they had, in 4s and 3s. Lots of Eley and other brands. Kent faststeel shipment delayed until later this month.
Great comments on pump guns guys. Food for thought.
$31.99 for 25 rounds.
Eley VIP 31gm loads were $30.99
Ha ha @Micky Duck we have similar tastes!
I might take you up on that. The other one that looks interesting is the Winchester SXP. All a bit academic at the moment, have blown my spare cash on a shotgun (Rem 870 express - left hand) for the boy and gearing up with new deks etc. Will have to make do with the ol' SKB this season.
few years back had mate shooting with us so he used my pump action..I used the old Bakail U/O for opening weekend and to be honest really didnt end up with many less birds...well maybe when I got the jump on whole heap of canadas up close....mind you still got 7 birds from that wee episode.
four rounds 2 3/4 did the damage.
im not gainsaying your h&r so much but those guncity pos hell yes.
i tried a nice winchester 1300 3inch ammo jammed it tighter than the proverbial
took it straight back and grabbed one of the several rem 870,s they had
.when you now you know same with the ladieeees.
you can drop the 870 in the lake walk half a mile before you realise you lost it.walk back find it in a foot of water and mud
wipe it off but not properly,
get up in the morning to find it covered in surface rust which fortunatly comes of a piece of piss cos you literatly bath it in rem oil everytime you clean it.
out with the internals via that little lever beside the substancial listen up mossberg decent shell lifter dry bit of oil and away you go.
even tho it still fired wet grubby and covered in shite
i had to know if it would before you ask and yes i checked there was no mud in the chamberr barrel:yaeh am not durnk:
Had a lightweight wing master 870 years ago should never have sold it.
