I have only flocked the heads on these decoys. To do the entire bodies would have been a very very costly exercise, not so in the flocking cost, but in the paint. I used the paint as described in Paul Stennings article, great article too, but redo each decoy twice and get the same mix of the various paints to get the tint would have been a challenge!
its taken me a few hours to do the 5 dozen ducks or so, and the Geese.
Maybe over the off season i may do a couple here and there, it may be an interesting way to mix up the variations.
Things i now know, no need to mask out the eyes, some surfaces really need a good sanding to allow the paint good purchase on the decoy (specific brands are worse than others) , no need to "weather" the flocked decoys too much, they will get that out in the field! start early as if the the F**K up fairy visits then you have a bit of extra time up your sleeve!! SCRUB decoys and water blast, prep that surface!
Ive have included a photo of the geese, you can see the difference in the black and white painted head verse one with only the white painted part, at the end of the day anything that we do to these decoys will be better than what you may have in the first instance, as i think im going to have to go back and repaint some of the geese heads to get rid of that shine!
these ducks have only one coating of green paint and flocking material, i will post further images of the second coat and then the painting of the head
