Hi There .you would be best to drive down to the waikato where you have plenty of public wetlands and lakes to explore it wouldnt take much to find a spot.

Also plenty of birds in the harbours all you need is a small kayak to sneak the edges on high tide,..you can walk small creeks ,just beware of houses
