    Gun/bird dog breeders

    Kia ora!

I am in the process of moving my family back to NZ after living in Australia for the last 20 years, super stoked to be coming home

Just doing some homework on getting a versatile gun/bird dog for upland hunting and retrieving as well as being a good family pet, can anyone recommend good breeders and or trainers? I have time on my hands and realistically won’t be ready to go through the motions of getting the dog till late this year/early next year. (Bloody hoping I won’t have to wait too long to roll over my license etc too!)

Thought I’d pop my first post cherry lol and reach out and also say hi.

    Cheers

    Benny

Jim Simpson 021 1634372. We have an English Pointer dog off him. They are hunting dogs. Ours can sniff deer 2miles away on a hillside. Going really well on the pheasants now. 1 year old. Jim is in Te Puke. He sold a splendid bitch pup to a dude in Levin. Tempted to rob the dude when I saw it when we were picking up our pup.

Thanks TeRei! Good to know, I have some family in Te Puke and will be spending a bit of time between Napier, the Mt and Waikato for work.

I have a Gordon Setter from Rob, Great dog, nose, loves to hunt but turns off at home as a pet. Loud bark when strangers come calling.
If you have time turn up to a couple of events as a number of breeders also compete.
Then you know at least its a hunting dog rather than a show ring star.

To be fair some setters make great retrievers others not interested and have to be trained to do it. Also more sensitive to cold than a Lab or similar heavy bodied/fatter dog going in and out of cold water.

Thanks for the mention @TeRei - went out with a litter sister of your boy today, she was up from the south island and going really nicely.
@Shot Bro I have a litter planned out of Betty the black dog in my avatar picture, who is grandmother of TeRei's dog and the matriarch of my kennel. This will be her third and final litter before she gets too old. She is my still my main dog, and has produced dogs that have proven themselves up and down the country on all manner of upland game. If you look at the results page of the P&S club link that ZQlewis put up, you will see photos of a son of hers winning at championship level. Sire to be decided but could possilby be some exciting import blood. Feel free to get in touch on the number above. Cheers Jim

Thanks Jim! I’ll drop you a line some time soon and check out the dogs on the club page. Just organised my kids citizenships by decent and waiting for all that to come through. I was hoping the trans-Tasman bubble would be opening around now, but looking to not be the case, so we have had to go with plan B. So now we are unfortunately at the mercy of broader control and governments which will cost me some time. I’m hoping my NZ firearms licensing will be granted during these times, doubt very much I’ll see any of the upland season this year now. Cheers mate! Benny

I will have a litter of working English Setter pups on the ground by next weekend. Both parents hunt well and are good retrievers.

Hey Cmore, sorry for late reply.. For some reason my notifications are going to junk, even though I’ve marked them as safe??

I’m still jumping through hoops here trying to get back. Just had to apply for a permit to leave Australia lol, flights are being cancelled and more red tape being stung up everywhere.

Love English Setters, not sure my timing will be viable for the opportunity, appreciate the offer though mate.

See how things roll from here.

    Cheers
