Nuisance Ducks - can they be shot out of season?

Years ago while farming in Northland, we had major problems with Paradise Ducks coming off the molt and converging on our river pastures. It was nothing to have 3,000 birds mowing down the paddocks which had been locked up for hay. After lots of negotiation with the then Wildlife Service, we were given permission to shoot them out of season in an effort to disperse the numbers. The Wildlife guys actually came out and were part of the shooting team.

Today I had a very irate cocky leave a message on my phone requesting that I come out and 'disperse' a large number of Paradise Ducks from his pastures. Whats the rules these days on shooting nuisance ducks? I know that it was gazetted a couple of years ago allowing you to shoot shags if they were causing problems without needing formal permission. I cannot find any information on the Dept of Conservation or the Fish and Game web sites.

Happy to go down and make some noise for the cocky, but even happier to drive the message home with some direct hits if its permissible.

Ring fish and game and get a permit to disturb.

Can anyone see that area of your property????? No, then blow the fkrs away,put the breast meat in the freezer & use what's left for vege garden fertiliser!!!!
No different to wasting good gamebirds with steel shot!!!! AND you get a shot away. Can't all be bad!!!!

Got a permit so all good. Only really want to scare them enough for the farmer to be happy but then want me to come and kill them come May :thumbsup:

two tips for you
let 10 of so land then shoot 1 or 2 which makes other 8 bugger off for safer ground and means you can shoot for longer before you get to magic number on your permit

shoot a few bunnies or pick up some roadkill and TIE it to top of posts around paddocks affected..ol Harry Hawk will sit and feast and the ducks wont come near.

good advice micky also dont shoot pairs but take a bird or 2 out of every mob and dont be frightened to waste a shot or 3 scareing them after you harvest a couple out of the mob.

We have had a special permit to shoot Pukeko's out of season, about half a dozen DOC guys came and had a crack as well, ended up shooting about 100 of them.

No charge for the permit. I told Fish and Game that I had no intention to kill, but the permit has come back with the authority to do so. However, the email that came with the permit cautioned that abuse of the intent to disturb (ie actively hunting the birds) would result in a costly prosecution for the shooter and the land owner.
As part of the disturbance management F+G offered a Zon-gun at $2 per day plus courier. This is an LPG fueled bird scarier. The land owner has chosen to give that a go as well.

so you can kill 10....as I said earlier do it in dribs n drabs so you scare heaps and kill stuff all, you cant take em for eating yourself so better to leave them for May.

thats been one of my gripes is the confusion and iconsistent conditions/language from region to region over these permits.
i believe the last one i had anything to do with here cost the farmer 99 buks and that it allowed close to a hundred parries from memory.
some of those bottom conditions sound a bit ott so your just supposed to sit somewhere and shoot at or near birds?
you can give the meat away but not use it yourself whereas with normal season ducks you cant give them to charity??
