We have a short parrie season starting this weekend in Northland. I assume it's similar around the rest of the country. Post your tips. Based on my limited experience, here's my tips.
1) Find a spot where parries like to hang out in good numbers, usually around troughs and puddles in paddocks rather than pond and lakes, but they visit the latter as well.
2) Decoys and callers work well.
3) They're big birds, use appropriate shot size.
4) Not the best eating, you need to get inventive.
Just go hunting for deer, stalk quietly up a river bed... Guarantee you'll find at least one pair to wake the entire valley
I believe it's just north of the harbour bridge that's open.
I'm heading your way for my first Parrie shoot tomorrow. Looking forward to it. I'm heading out with an experienced mate so hopefully will get onto a few and learn a bit while I'm there.
Eating wise I'm told it's all for salami.
The electronic duck calls that toggle between mallards and parries works well on parries.
I can hide behind some bushes, flick it to the parrie setting and play it, before long the nosey fuckers fly over for a look and bang bang you now have 2 decoys.
Stick them out in front of you with a stick or similar to hold them up, play the call and in they come (simple)

We gave up calling parries with a blown call after we tried a Phone app and UE boom last year.
A lot easier to line up birds and just play the caller. Worked well too...

Can you find a field with cut crops such as Maize etc.. Always a good prospect if there's anything getting cut nearby.
Just downloaded the NZ game caller app. Can't tell you if it will work on game but definitely works at pissing off the Mrs.
It does work well, better when paired with a bluetooth speaker to get more volume as mentioned above. I did it for a season, then got pissed off with batteries dying and trying to use a touchscreen phone with wet fingers. Bought an AJ Caller in the end.Quote:

Breast out the bird. Lightly fry the breasts then place in oven at 180 for 10min
Attachment 190493 while that’s in the oven fry up some Pancetta Attachment 190494
Then fry up some red onions red peppers and add to salad with pine nuts and Olive oil.
Next dice breasts Attachment 190495 and lightly fry in the pancetta fat.
Add to salad and eat. Attachment 190496

The wife has a really good recipe for peking Duck.
We don’t do it that often as it smokes out the kitchen and also you need to give the oven a good clean afterwards.
But it’s really nice.
I’ll see if she has it written down, I can take a pic and post that.
cook corn beef in crock pot,remove and eat,chuck your frozen duck in crock pot in the still hot juice,leave it along over night,add a bit more water enough to mostly cover bird,turn on crock pot in morning before you go to work,by time you get home it will be falling off bone. cranberry sauce goes well with it. lot of meat on a parrie. or cube and coat in beer batter and quick fry.
dead birds are good decoys.... if you have a few come in at once and wing a bird,DO NOT rush out to finish it off..wait a couple of minutes as often any that got away come back to find thier buddy,if she still squauking you will often get more(be sensible about it and dispatch bird in timely fashion)...Ive seen old man out in open with wounded bird on ground and two female parries still came back to buddy on ground,he got them both too.
if two of you caught in open,one person freeze and lower down to ground,the other keep walking,often birds will circle fella walking just out of range,now where is 2nd person BOOM BOOM. Same when walking river etc,stay 50 yards apart.
if you shoot pairs you will be needing new teeth but flock parries are great eating.
hopefuly goin goose hunting sunday morning but i wont be frying up the 10 to 15 pounders theyre tough as and salami material but the younger birds are sweet as

Two swans and four parries over two days at two different spots. Was hoping for higher numbers, but various factors were against us.
