About LinkBacksRotoehu forest is right there for you, Kaingaroa forest is bit further but all accessible on the weekends with a permit that will cost I think about $50 for a season.
Not sure what the numbers are like, but heck if you were tripping over birds it wouldn't be fun, would it.
BOP is damn good for pheasants. Id say better than Far North these days (just my opinion).
