Thread: Pheasant hunting 19.12.15

Happy Christmas everyone. This is a video from last Saturday 19th December on the syndicate shoot, here in the Glens of Antrim Northern Ireland.
The pheasants were very testing with 30-40 mph winds up their tail most of the day, but it made for good shooting.
I spent most of the day beating so didn't get loads of footage, but captured some nice shots.

Sorry to be a party pooper old trout BUT: I think a more accurate name for this activity is "pheasant/tame chook SHOOTING".
Not exactly "Hunting" is it?????

Each to their own fella. If you hunted this ground you would know about it. Briars up to your waste, steep hill sides & deep burns. I can also assure you that these birds aren't tame.

What would define as hunting if you don't mind me asking?

Walking behind the pointer on a two hour circuit & stalking up to the spot where that big FAT cockbird got the drop on you last time, nerves a twitter, finger poised & reminding yourself NOT to jump out of your skin when the sneaky bastard gets up AGAIN,but he goes in a completely different direction, chortling away with his tail feathers giving you the "churchill" salute!!!! NOT going after tame chooks that come running to the rattle of corn in a bucket.


That's what is happening here on our "tame chook" preserves where the gifted ones arrive in their Hughes500's and stretched limo's & cough up $5000 or so for an afternoon's slaughter followed by drinkies at the marque!!!!

If your shooting is different from this then I apologise if I offended you old chap. it's only 120 sleeps & a wake up 'til our next gamebird hunting season!!!!

You didn't offend me at all. I'm not about to start criticising anyone's form of hunting because everyone has different methods & techniques.

Thanks. To be honest there is very few truely wild pheasants nowadays, most birds have originated from released birds at some stage.

These birds were bought at 8 weeks old in august, put in a holding pen, released at the end of September, started shooting in November. So they had 2 months in the wild getting chased by foxes & birds of prey before we started hunting them.

I know not everyone will agree with this hunting. However, if you watch the video you will see that a lot of non-sporting birds were left to fly another day.

many here forget that f&g used to do exactly that here in some regions to boost bird numbers until it became ''uneconomic'
they flushed as wild as any wild bird from what i saw on the vid and certainly bear no resemblence to ''planted'' stateside preserve birds.
you havent lived untill you.ve had a wild pheasant flush 3 feet in front of your gsp,s nose cackling the whole way up or from a bush you wouldnt think would hold a sparrow via a flushing dog.

I know what you mean, the cover is so tight in this place that quite often the dogs & hunters have to almost step on the birds to flush them.
