Got a few pheasants round my place - just created a birdlife haven by killing predators for several years no rats, possums and cats really works but I do know there is a weasel round that I cant catch
I havent seen any chicks yet but must be close
I nearly stood on a nest on Sunday about half meter from her she frightened the daylights out of me when she took off had a quick look seven eggs hope she comes back usually they do
I was working round the patch one day last week about 750m up a drive in and out worked on about 1ha of ground saw 24 roosters and seven hens for the day without even trying that tells you what all the hens are doing nesting
Roosters are flat out crowing all day doing their singing and dancing routine lovely to watch
Saw one big rooster yesterday that owns a patch of the bush line near where I was working chased off another rooster several times he had a couple of hens with him they are quite territorial he was in and out of the bush all day spots me and he runs back in then ten minutes later he is back out performing again
Havent seen any quail chicks but quite a few families around groups of maybe ten this guy came and sat on a ponga in the garden yesterday about 5m away - he is the watcher - has his family all round feeding
I am hoping for a population boom this year so many quail and pheasants around

Nice work...
I haven't been out since start of august to check out the places around Auckland.
Went to Piha for the weekend to do some fishing of the rocks, took a drive up the road towards the end of the beach. heard few pheasant calls middle of Sunday with half the Auckland people out sight seeing on the beach. Obviously cocks don't mind it....
No good me telling you guys how to suck eggs cause I am just a learner on pheasants and quail never shot one in my life
Used to be a duck hunter shot more than my share but then lost the urge to kill birds - but I still shoot deer
I have a 30 acre retreat in the BOP 50/50 bush and grazing land fenced off the bush and reverting more to native I spend a bit of time tending to 2000 new native trees I go there a few days each week
So I spend time around their patch and where they used to always fly now they often slope off along the ground
The property has a large area of bush around it and neighbours are also into predator control the bird numbers in general are amazing
Although I dont shoot it is my hope that the birds we are breeding will disperse all round the district for the benefit of hunters
I have always heard pheasants crowing but not often seen them now I almost always see some of them singing and dancing like in this clip (not mine) I guess they are just putting on a show for the hens and probably sending an alarm about me being on their patch - Ring Necked Pheasant - YouTube
Speaking of the devils just drove home from work. Akoranga Drive SH1 off-ramp in Takapuna-Auckland I found this...

Suprised to see birds in such a populated area in almost central Auckland, and when I do see them they are usually run over...
When I was at the mankau super clinic I heard 3 different cocks crowing in the land next to the car park. Maybe you could run your dogs in there for practise?
Where they have cut the pines above my place there are now cock birds everywhere...haven't seen a hen for a while...must all be on the nests.
Hens around my place have gone to ground, must be on eggs. Cocks are everywhere, some with broken tails so must have been scrapping.
the Calis up the road are pairing off, won't be long before you see a whole pile of bumblebees on stilts following mum
My brownies here aren't laying yet but they can be funny. Here's hoping!
Heard yesterday of an incident where a KW stopped for allow a duck with her ducklings cross the road; in the end three KWs were lined up waiting!! The informant third truck in the row, is a great duck man!!
All this talk of breeding and young chicks , but still some dog trialists on here are training and running there dogs around nesting bird sites. The excuse of saying the birds happen to be there is bullshit.
How many years do some of us have to write such a post, UU??? What do these people want?
I want pictures or even better vids of bird flushed and shot. Or even flushed.
Wrong time of year i know.
Will this do, not NZ but birds flushing and being shot

Maybe need to watch on pc
Can't watch possum trappers Vid either.
I watched it on my phone. Cool vid
Working a new Hive site this afternoon on a farm close to home and had a young Ringneck hen walk out in front of us with week or so old chicks. Property has great habitat for birds and bees LOL, gorse, willow, blackberry, honeysuckle, inkweed and miles of barberry hedges. Cock birds calling all around too :)
Still havent seen any chicks either quail or pheasant but the hawks are flying very low so I guess they are onto it
Plenty of cock pheasant scrapping going on often two cocks after one hen - so they are still on the job
Quail are entertaining seem to be real performers and will come in very close I was down at the cattle yards today and one Cali cock just wouldnt stay away
He seemed focused on the seaward view just wouldnt turn round to look at me about 8m away
http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/...Stuff/0161.jpg
So I had to go round the yard to get his better side about 4m away no fear do hunters still shoot them?

Seen a couple teal ducklings at the pond yesty.
Petros is picking up our pheasant chicks today
Fabulous foto, Time Out...calendar material!!

In my area, the Cali is back!!!! YAY!!!! Hopefully they can have a good breeding season this year...have only seen one clutch but do not go out to look for them at the minute!
The previous pictures I posted were taken on my 30 acre rural block where I have carried out extensive predator control birds numbers (native, pheasant and quail) are booming
I see this pair round our garden on the outskirts of Tauranga but I dont like their chances of breeding too many cats, rats and hedgehogs
My neighbour tells me they have ten pet hedgehogs b .ds of animals that take eggs from ground nesting birds we are close to an estuary so rats will also be a real problem
I believe that city folk could improve bird habitat by controlling predators just think how nice it would be to have cali quail round the garden
The simple way to deal to rats is with a Goodnature A24 gas operated trap very satisfying to find a few rats round the trap with their heads smashed in :P

startig to see lot of chicks now god quail young are tiny.dogs havin a ball with all the points dont think he quite gets why i wont shoot or release him to flush:)
I haven’t seen any pheasant or quail chicks yet – but I heard a couple of hens calling yesterday so I guess they have chicks on the ground
The quail family groups are gone – just seeing pairs marching round together – so not sure when they will be nesting
I went through our bush yesterday and checked 20 rat bait stations and 5 possum bait stations – a month since I last loaded them – I didn’t use a single replacement bait block and no new possum bait – either the bastards have gone off Pestoff bait – or they are dead
Nothing in a couple of Timms traps or in the cat cage – the GN A24 trap hasn’t smashed anything for ages
During my walk – I flushed lots of roosters and a couple of hens
So after feeding the rats for nearly two years – I reckon that I have got them beat for this breeding season at least - perfect timing this year
My worst predators round the property is a couple of hawks that are flying real low at present – but I have a couple of magpies that chase the shit out of the hawks when they come round
Cutting the hay paddocks next week – unfortunately a few pheasants will perish and if the silly hens have nested out there – they will have to start again
Great pest control Time Out good work:cool:
Is it late for hens to be sitting on eggs? There's a nest in the paddock with 10 eggs still. Hen was still on it this morning
Just a short addendum to my original story on Page 1 of this thread
We have tried to create a bird haven on a 30 acre rural BOP property about half bush and surrounded by a lot of bush
Killed all the possums over many years of poisoning bait stations are now rarely touched
Killed all the rats on the property with intensive trapping and poisoning over the last year or two 20 bait stations and nothing being touched now
Got a mate to clean up all the rabbits because they were becoming a pest
So what is there for the stoats to eat pheasants and other birds :(
Still seeing a few big roosters but most of the hens have gone only a few juvenile birds I suspect that the stoats took out the hens while they were nesting
I have recently seen weasels and stoats in broad daylight
I am now on a steep learning curve on how to kill these loopy b@st@rds before they clean up the rest of the pheasants building my own box traps and will start with twelve
If you are into predator control dont make my mistake focus on mustelids early on they are wicked bird killers

Yes was a good read . Was in back blocks of Fiordland and herd a racket going down , birds stretching and performing , then we seen it a stoat running through the bush . Really gutted me to see that , was too small a target to have a crack at the little barstard , but kind of wished I had tryed
