One of the farms I shoot hares on the farmer has asked me to help reduce the number of pukekos on his property as they are getting out of control.
The farm is in Oxford North Canterbury, I know that the land owner needs to apply for a permit to cull them then good to go, can't for the life of me find out where to apply online on DOC or Fish and Game websites.
Can anyone point me in the right direction ?
Fish and game will be the place, might need to ring them though.

Yip. F&G. Got one last year to remove a few parries.
The landowner has to do it tho. And there’s paperwork to fill out afterwards as well. I think they might’ve even come out before to inspect the problem

Yeah that's not a problem, the land owner is happy to do all that. I'm just trying to point him in the right direction as it's quite a publicly visible area so everything has to be done right (not that it wouldn't be anyway) last thing we want is trouble with snowflakes and vegans.Quote:

From memory, it stipulated x amount could be shot and disposed of by burning or burying. Wasn’t much of a drama for landowner/manager to obtain

Correct, new farm for me and heaps of ducks that never got shot at last season, with any luck I'll be shooting them next season. Have already broached the subject and he's pretty keen on the ideaQuote:

Yes, the pukeko season is the same, or around the same, as the duck season (might vary in different regions). Like ducks, they are protected outside the season.
During the season the usual rules apply - shotgun only, must be shot in flight, etc.

Used to see a lot of them on the coast. Did the odd puke drive too. No they wont fly as far as a duck but they can and will fly a long way if they have to.
About once a year we get a puk that's flown over to Stewart Island. Closest point from South Is to Stewy is 21 k's.
@dannyb did you get all this sorted out, did you get a permit etc, and did they say you can only shoot them in flight?

They are bastard thing in abundance at the moment, mate planted maybe 100 plus natives, flaxes and other plants on a patch on the farm. Withen a week an a bit the pu-keke had plucked the most of them out lol, cost him a fortune.
F & G - gave me one for swans no problem - permit to disturb but allows you to harvest a few (conditions like offer to local iwi) - done over phone and emailed - renewed by phone too
