I have got enough for what I hopefully need. Eley, fibre wad...some I have spoken to say they can be a bit iffy...surely not if Eley is making them???? Oh well, in 29 days time I will find out...!!!!!

if you dont have any luck with those, you could try Maimai Supplies
Yes I stand corrected...Eley is but a brand name now...anyway, we'll see how they go...I am not sure if there will be any willing participants out there on The Day anyway...what with all the rain my favourite place has been subjected to.

EeeBees ,I been using Eley steel 3" 1 1/4 oz #4 for 3 seasons & its absolutely brilliant. Half the leed you use with lead & sorts everything mallards, parries, hares .Some may tell you #4 steel too light but seems to kill ducks pretty dead.
Thank you, Chris, as a complete novice at this duck business, I really appreciate your advice. Silly question but should I remove the chokes (top barrel **, bottom *, as was recommended to me for pheasant) for the steel or can I leave them in?
Googled this link re the Eley Brothers...fascinating!!

you should always have chokes in the gun or your gonna bugger the threads .For steel on a u/o no more than 1/2 choke & 1/4 choke bottom barrel.Still gives a tight enough pattern with the higher velocity of steel.
thank you again, Chris.

Totally agree. Try firing some shots at some newsprint at differant ranges and with differant chokes (don't go tighter than 1/2). It will give you a good idea of your ideal/max range with that particular load/choke combo. If there are more 'duck sized holes' in your pattern than you would like then try a differant type of ammo and see how that goes.
Best of luck for the season,
Rich
I even go for a more open choke if spring shooting a small creek where the ducks can get up very close.Cylinder or even a skeet choke ,the combination of 1/4 & 1/2 would be for over decoys etc.
Hi EeeBees,
What size pond or piece of water are you shooting over? This will play a big part in determining what size shot to use in your ammo and also choke selection.
Al
From what I understand it is a farm dam of some size...have not been there!!!! (how bad is that!?) This is really neat...I have learnt much today!!!

i am getting some pheasant shot from here, havnt made up my mind which one yet. Does anyone else shoot this stuff
That 28gr 20g load seems pretty cheap, not too familiar with the paper/fibre combo wads and how they go...
Did some pattern shots with the Eley VIP 6 shot, 36gms this afternoon...very nice even spread...20, 30, 35 metres...didnt go any further as where I shoot in the rough I am unlikely to fire a longer range what with having the dogs and all...need a lift of 50mms to 2 oclock with the bottom barrel...
