quite extensive article on this website complaining about how big a PIA the canadas are with their saturation bombing &scoffing of cockies feed paddocks /public parks ,leaving of course screeds of their turds as a visiting card . we are well aware of high country framers loathing of them but now its local govt whining.

Of interest one of the causes hinted at was the prevalent anti gun attitude and loathing of shooting close inhabited spaces ,citing an example of where shotgun pellets peppered a house and IIRC a.22round went through a window during a LG contractors attempt to cull some .

That reporter should be charged for heretical statements even mentioning big black guns-be still my beating heart -fetch me another gin please beatrice,theres a good lass!

reading between the lines one got the impression its a thinly veiled plea for the infamous green lollies to be released on the birds -god help us all .

control of introduced animals and birds has always been a contentious issue in NZ - some see Canadas as a winged marvel wonderous to see - some see them as a dirty great big feed scoffing pasture fouling flying rat - the fact is without any natural predation in NZ the numbers need to be controlled - lethal injection will probably apply to an egg pricking injection has been used for years - green lollies no I seriously doubt that - just to difficult to actually use on something like a canadian goose - one would need to get them taking some kind of preefeed first - just frought with problems - non target take would be a serious issue - my thoughts are with the farmers who have a flock of 300 land in their saved pasture - no get out and shoot - and besides they are not half bad eating - like hedgehogs mustelids cats possums rats and child biting dogs all need the bullet cure and we cannot be squeamish

The canada geese around our area are well overdue for a culling. I can get to within 2m of a feeding flock at the moment and with a net I think I could get 10+ in a throw but of course there would be public that would see netting as causing undue stress to the animals. I'd buy a PCP to have a go at them if it was allowed(there are a couple of spots with good backstops where the geese could be shot from cover).

The ground around the kids playground where we are is a mine field of goose crap as are all of the paths and on a busy day I'd estimate close to 150 geese on the 4 ponds/grassy flats in the area. Our local council(KCDC) has a management plan but is not following it.

Hugh Shields(who seems to be currently banned from the forum) was doing some private culling in the area but without a large scale effort I doubt any one person would make a dent in the population. Unsure if there is an answer to controlling the CG population but the seemingly nothing being done now isn't working in our area.

what is stopping you using a PCP on them legally they have no protection so can be shot with a 458 magnum if thats ya thing - is it because of the land tenure /public place issue - that can sometimes be got around with carefull planning robust safety plan and the Council onside - give it a go with some mates -

Punt guns, drones with recoilless shotguns, decoys with a claymore in, fougasse net cannons. Ok May not be practical everywhere but worth a try surely

cant just have people shoot and eat them...

have to spend millions to the poison gravy train and associated "conservationists"

well many years ago at Kaitaia I had to listen to a 1080 protester rabbiting on about getting huge speakers out in the bush which blasted sonic waves which drove the possums out of the scrub - we pointed out what about our native bird life - I had visions of bald fantails flying out screaming turn that f*&%# g thing off - another protester who had smoked way to much of his own homegrown product tried seriously to get finance from DOC to invest in a natural cure for possums - this involved grinding up various parts of possums and then spreading it thru the bush - thus possums would then emerge out onto the farmland to escape the smell where they could be caught - he was actually serious and put in local paper how disappointed he was that he could not get funding - apparently the idea had been around for a while and originated from America ( where else) - the real problem with these nutters is that some people actually believe them

Yep, there are in plague numbers around where I live and very used to human presence, I reckon I could safely shoot 100s of them were it legal.
They are my protein backstop should the apocalypse happen and supply chains fail but that's another story

The sky went dark with the buggers when we jet boated up the Wanganui river deltas just north of Harihari. They really need a multiprong approach from half a dozen shooting teams a km apart with walkie talkie comms and bucketloads of 3 inch #2's.

I would interpret it as a lighthearted comment. Not many people just spew vitriol for no good reason.

I think one of the problems is that some still think they are protected and dont realise they are now same as a myna or magpie- can be shot anywhere any time with whatever - legal permission on property of course

For sure, I thought they were duck shooting season only.

In South Africa there is a bird called a quelea that flocks in huge numbers and is an agricultural pest. The video below shows how they target nesting sites when things get bad.

the problem lies with the Regional Councils and DOC

Weird how yoy can shoot cg in or on or around water with anything including lead buckshot but not allowed lead shot for other wildfowl. I reckon more hunters woyld be into them jf the ammo rules were reverted. Cant use leaf on geese near water during bird season ffs.

Always the same, I thought I would be a useful person during the earthquakes, older, level headed, seen my share of industrial accidents.
Felt somewhat useless as it was controlled & was told straight, you are not required.

So relevant onwards, have contacted & worked for local bodies, offered to sort these bird problems. I’m discreet & careful, fully set up with all the gear and time, can recruit a dozen other senior people, with the same gear PCP air rifles & night vision, thermals. Costs would be minimal, basically doing it for nicks , GC some would even make use of them, present economic climate.

Frustrating really, authorities moan about these situations, yet they are too risk adverse & PC to make things happen.
Embarrassed Kiwi. Gone are the days of, Roll your sleeves up & get on with it !

Federated Farmers lobbied for Geese to be taken off the license to that they could be controlled at any time of the year by anyone. They also choppered a certain high country lake leading to mortally injured birds dragging themselves onto SH 73 -great look for our bloody tourism industry .

DOC on realisng they fucked up majorly promptly placed the clown who authorised it on leave -we found this out when a very very pissed off colleague of mine fronted them demanding answers. Oops somehow I was able to see the paperwork giving all the names etc as the guilty party inexplicably gave an enraged shooter a copy ,or was this an attempt to mollify him???

Suffice to say excavator loads of the stinky stuff was hurled into the revolving blade as DOC ducked for cover.The incumbent Min of conservation at the time was also a casualty handing in her ticket shortly after.

Oh yes youll love this -as a local chopper was used to herd the geese CAA regs didnt allow the use of steel ammo around choppers..steel which is statutory regulations for ellesmere so lead was used -10,000 rounds to be precise sourced from a hunting franchise sold by a self appointed expert recreational goose shooter,.

Overall a gigantic clusterfuck which simply made canadas very paranoid for quite some years and fucking hard to shoot . Some DOC staff got very embarrassed when it was mentioned others rolled their eyes"bosses couldnt be bloody told"

The Christchurch earthquakes were a golden opportunity for the canadas -as eastern chch reverted to jungle (gotta love those greenies eh what) the canadas moved in en masse.I saw mobs of 100or more regularly on the Avon River and realised then if they went unchecked again shit would hit fan .sure enough its happened but what efforts have been made seem few and far between ,although a lot of it seems to be influenced by public reactions and perceptions as we have had the misfortune to bear the brunt of recently

I'm not sure whether the situation actually got better or is worse since Feds were successful there?

It's funny in a way how history repeats, Federated Farmers are now making noises about ducks also being taken out of gamebird status to allow a free-for-all.

As usual, I'm sure there's no shortage of willing hunters, the problem is land access.

That population was rumoured to have started with a small release. bullshit ofcourse they rose from over pressured birds from the wairarapa.shot quite a few on a certain rich buggers holdings at te horo.started growing at the param airport area and decommissioned wakanae crap ponds

And got govt dough to help .?not to mention tax breaks once they got irst status.

I saw a mob of approx 20 in flight today and Id bet my left proverbial I know exactly where the huas are hoochied up and its a well known CHCH site .

CCCwont take any action as its in a rec area.no Im not going to reveal till I get a chance to eye ball mk1 the bloody site and all going well see if I can guage the size of the population.
