I know that one. The good thing is they're getting used to you not shooting them so you should be in a good spot when you're properly tooled up.

goddam it was cold last night we pulled out early no wind and the prospect of poking around at nearly invisible duck.
made leaving them for better earlier flying wheather a good idea.

They're just playing with your mind. As soon as you've given up and only carry bird shot they'll trot up to you and steal your lunch.

Funny you should mention seals, I just saw one on dusk this evening... 47km inland!

I recall duck shooting at this very same spot south of Paeroa at the start of the season, and recall seeing something I dismissed as a giant eel. I told my wife when I got home I had seen the biggest eel I had ever seen in my life just before dusk. I swear it had the head the size of a dog, it even had a muzzle like a seal. Now I know I wasn't losing it

I saw one on the Waiau not far from Hinuera one year - I had a look at the map and figured it was well over 100km from the sea. Rang DOC, they said no big deal, just a wild animal doing wild animal stuff. Seemed like a good answer really.
