looks like a Partridge to me
But more likely to be a Male Cali Quail
Not a quail. Twice as big.
That's a red legged partridge...beautiful!!!
I didn't know there were Partridges in NZ, which is why I back pedalled. :(
What makes you think I would have said it was a bird? :D
Got to within 3 metres of it. Pretty poor photo from my phone though.

I once thought about buying some pheasant and quail to boost low numbers on our place - but I killed the predators instead - the birds responded by themselves - saw nine pheasant going up the drive in the car yesterday - must piss them off when we turn up and disturb them
Some different birds like Red Legged Partridge or Chukor would be great to see round the district
I wonder how they would survive alongside pheasant
